Hello,
We are currently trying to breed our two medium sized dogs. They are both 4 years old. She has had a litter in the past and is currently flagging and standing. All he does is sniff and walk away. She is approx in day 5 or 6 of her estrus. what makes me so curious is that we had a stray beagle come into our yard about a week ago that was in season and I thought he was going to jump out of his fur. Any thoughts?
thanks

Has he been used at stud before?

My boys would also walk away at days 5-6.  They wouldn't waste their energy!  :-)  :-)

though there is no set rules, i personally have never had a mating that early in a season, my earliest was a day 11 mating and that is the only one that early all my others have been from day 13 upto day 21 so i would not be the least bit concerned this early.

just because she is flagging doesnt mean she is ready, experienced bitches can flag for a long period, one of my girls would flag from around day 8 right up to day 28!

He knows she isnt ready so he wont even bother trying....sensible boy :)

Your dog isn't silly, he knows it's too early!

No. He has no experience other than humping our other male dog.

Was also wondering if we should take them to neutral territory. Somewhere other than hour home.

So that would make today day 12/13 which would be about right, thats probably why your dog wasn't interested any earlier..she may even be receptive tomorrow/next day aswell??
