I am so MAD.... I met a man in the park this morning who I have chatted to before on many occasions and he seemed nice but have not seen for about 4 months. He got a young Newfie some 12 months ago, a male, from a less than carefull breeder, but he is a nice dog anyway. Then about 6 months ago they "Rescued" a young bitch (Rescued as in bought from a family who did not want her) she was very nervy and also very small but he was going to care for her and make up for her bad start and was all "poor girl, we will give you a lovely calm forever home now". Today he tells me she has just had 10 pups....no KC reg no health checks, no homes waiting. He assures me he will sell them easy as he is the only person breeding in this area (South somerset). OHHH it makes me so MAD..... I hope I don't see him again for a long time as I was less than polite to him today and could be even more so next time...
I hope they get to 8 weeks and he has them running round tearing his home apart and no sales but it will not happen will it? He will sell them at a nice profit and do it all again. And if he doesn't the the nice kind peoplet Newfie rescue will take them won't they???
Grrrr I am spitting feathers.

Oh I think they will get to 5 - 6 weeks and he will be desperate to get rid of them with neighbours complaining about the noise.

I do hope he finds it hard to sell them, so that eh won't want to do ti again.

Barbara you and I are obviously kindred spirits....I must have a heart as black as coal because I wish he would have very problem under the sun...poor poor puppies and poor bitch I wonder how often he will breed her???
Even nice people turn out to be fools at times. The old saying the more I see of people the more I like my dogs is so very true.

True, appearances can be so deceptive, prehaps it's because on casual acquaintance we only see what we want to see. But sadly it's more than foolish, I just can't comprehend why people do it and unfortunately when the pups start to become start to become active he probably will even less thoughtfull as to what happens to them.

People like that make me so mad!!  I hope this litter makes a huge dent in his wallet so he never considers breeding again.  The poor bitch aswell, going to a new home and with a nervy temperament...should never be bred from!

And here is me planning my first litter...after owning this particular breed for over 13 years, working and showing them I finally have a lovely bitch to breed from, health tests all done with excellent results, stud dog now finally chosen with the help of my bitches breeder and also the approval of the stud dog owner after meeting my bitch and they have also been watching her at the champ shows.  So much thought and planning has gone into this so I will hopefully be able to carry her line on and she won't be mated until the end of the year....it really does make me mad when someone just breeds a litter with no thought!!!

I reckon 10 newfie pups are going to eat a LOT of food between them which will surely cost a fair amount to provide.

It's reasons like this why pups need to be traceable to the original person rather than a rescue having to absorb the problem - I'd hope having 10 full grown newfies back would definitely make them think twice about doing it again!!!

Could it have been an accidental mating.  No excuse i know, they should be more careful but if he's niave enough?

I really don't blame you here..
10 puppies of any breed is hard work but Newfies?, well I'm hoping that he struggles and struggles.. But not for the sake of the pups or the bitch(They never asked to be in this situation).. I'm with you all the way on this.. How and WHY??? WHY would you do such a thing?? Arrgghhh!!!

I'm wishing and hoping that one day we won't be able to advertise pups in free ad's or anything of the sort, pet shops etc.. This i'm sure will stop a lot of BYB's!!

Going with Sunshine's accidental mating, normally going to the vets and telling them this would or should prompt them to advise of the injection to stop the pregnancy?

He'll probably offer buyers a good deal on buying two pups......... There are currently two Newfoundland pups at the training classes I go to, same owner. They are very young but already too attached to each other and one is really nervous. A disaster waiting to happen. Don't LOOK wellbred either if you know what I mean.

Could it have been an accidental mating.

Quite possible I suppose but what is "Accidental" lets face it you whould have to be extremly stupid not to realize that a dog and bitch could mate!!!! and accidents can be avoided so sorry in my book no excuse. A quick trip to the vet and the accident is no more!!!!
Just another case of irresponsible stupidity in my book. and the chance of a quick buck!!! I have met him quite often and he never gave me the idea that he was stupid....I think he knew just what he was doing.

There's no excuse then for what has happened, whats done is done.  In hindsight no one responsible would leave the dogs alone but sometimes it can happen, Known dogs to scale gates ect to mate.  Its a sham it wasn't a singlton, typical that it was a large litter.  I expect he's not aware how much its going to take out of her feeding 10 pups.  maybe you should be a little naughty and offer him help so that the bitch doesn't suffer and suggest the health tests to him.

If its not an accidental breeding then he should be ashamed of himself not doing the testing.  Would it put him out of pocket much, I haven't looked what Rotties need.

I do hope the pups find good homes and not just to anyone and they (the new owners) do the health tests to ensure they have healthy dogs.  The poor bitch bet she wishes she'd stayed put.

unfortunately this isnt an isolated inccident , in welfare we are constantly taking in young dogs bred by puppy farmers , byb and people who think they can make a few quid , sold to homes who have no idea what they are taking on and when they cant cope they shove them back on the net or contact us if they have any morals , most are poor examples of the breed and some have awfull health problems , i dont see and end to it either we just have to weather the storm and hope it gets better !!!!

No wonder you are mad Aileen - I would be too! Worst thing is that these puppies will be adorable little teddy bears and will probably go to people who have NO idea how to care for a giant breed. Newfies are not the easiest breed to own when you haven't a clue what you are doing. They will need firm training if they are not to become giant teenage thugs who end up in rescue or worse because the owners 'can't cope' grrrr!

ditto Aileen. Sadly these people usually put a "pups for sale" ad in the local freebie and sell them without any probs, leaving the responsible amongst us wondering why "sods law" applies to the rest of us! :(

sorry for some reason i thought they were Rotties.  Silly me.  Yes it will be hard for for them to go to good homes.  when i looked at dogs many moons ago to see what I liked i turned down Newfies due to their size and slobbler otherwise i was nearly a Newfie owner.

They friend has them, they're like little donley's lol.

it is a shame when dogs are bred for the sake of it.  i was hoping it might have been a big accident but doesn't sound it.  I expect when the previous owners handed their dog over, they didn't expect her to be mated.  Here's hoping if any kc papers they've not transfered them over.  He'd have to give the money back haha.
