I would like to know if there is rule with breeders that you do not discuss puppy price's ?
i have emailed a couple of breeders with general questions and information on a rough guide price of a particular breed i am interested in
but never hear back from them, i just wanted to know if this is the wrong thing to do ?

Thank you in advance for any answers you may give.

I would always respond to an email - unless the only question asked was 'how much are your pups'.

Give the breeder lots of information about yourself, home, family, lifestyle and previous dog ownership experience etc - so it shows you have taken the time to write a reasonable email instead of just the 'one liner' that instantly put breeders off.

I hope you find what you're looking for - take your time.  Finding the right puppy is about finding the right breeder too....

I always respond to emails. My friend otoh hardly ever turns on her computer in spite of having an email address and a website, so it could be as simple as that. :-)

Ditto, though I would give a one liner back to the latter saying, breeders need to know about you if you expect a reply.

Also a lot of exhibitors will be away at shows this time of year, some going camping from show to show.

Of course if you gave lots of info about yourself, and they ignored your email, maybe they weren't the best kind of breeders.

If they were the kind motivated purely by money did not health test etc it could be that your email suggested to them you would ask lots of questions to which they would not have good answers.

you really should be buying into a breeder as much as a puppy, they should be there to help guide and support you throughout the pups life.

Where are you getting your breeder contacts from.

Apart from here the breed clubs are one of the best places for contacts of reputable breeders.

If you need to know the price of your chosen breed in order to find out if you can afford one, or need time to save up, then it may be worth asking on here first.  I recall a lot of conversation on this forum about email enquiries in the past and the general feeling seemed to be that breeders preferred phone calls and didn't want price to be the first question they got.  You could try calling breeders that do not have litters at the moment if you just want some background information OR you could have a look online - prices are often quoted somewhere although I wouldn't recommend buying from the online puppy sales sites.

I can't remember if there are any forum rules about naming the breed and the current prices but I don't think so.

When I was looking for a puppy I forgot to ask the price and as time went on I felt more and more anxious about saying anything.  Finally I decided to wait until the breeder told me!!

Good luck with your search

thanks for all your responses..

i have had a look at some breeders sites which have had a link through this site , and another one similar to this, also i have just googled and found websites and tend to also go via links from there sites.... and i have checked out the KC

i have given information in emails also not just a straight to the point question.

the only problem for me now is that i started out knowing what i wanted and now having problems as this breed comes in three sizes and i think i have fallen in love with them all :(

I think the average price for a puppy with parents health screened etc is about £800 though this does depend on the breed some breeds are much higher but that is the average price.

Definitely down to breed; I'd have said £500-£600 is more of an average for puppies from health-tested parents.

Why not contact the breed clubs?  They will be able to help you decide which size would be best for you and tell you how much to expect to pay.

Most breed clubs have a puppy co-ordinator and these people are usually willing to talk to you about all apsects of the breed, including any health testing (and results) that is required :)

Having looked for a long time at the same breed as you i would say around £750.00.

Don't forget that one thing to bear in mind is that it will cost more to trim a standard than a toy !!!!!
