Winnie had 3 lumps removed on Tuesday (1 on her flank, 1 on her elbow and 1 on her hind leg) and we've just had the results back.

Two of them have come back as grade 2 mast cell tumours and she's got to go back in again on Monday to be re-operated on to give a bigger clear margin around them. I'm hoping that will be that as the poor girl has had enough surgery in her short life. It was only a couple of years ago she had both ear canals removed and is very well known in the Vets!

So, please everyone, keep your fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

We went through this last year, the vet was quite shocked when the results came back
as the lumps didn't look nasties.

We too had to have the site on Abby's head re-operated on to get better margins.
Although I did feel mean about putting her through another operation I wanted to give
her the best chance possible.

She's since gone on to have another couple (MCT's - grade 2's) removed.
We just are very vigilant now with checking her for lumps.
We get all lumps found aspirated now.
Luckily for us the last one turned out to be a harmless cyst.

Fingers crossed for Winnie - hugs as know how you are feeling right now.

As a PS we also sent info off to the Animal Health Trust as they are researching this right now
in certain breeds. This was done via my vet.

I spotted one of these lumps about 5 months ago and pointed it out to the vet then, who thought it was a fatty lump. I wish I'd had it removed then.

Re the AHT I did have a look at their site and don't think they want any samples form Winnie (she's a Sussex Spaniel). If it happens to one of the Goldies I'll certainly bare it in mind.

Just a quick update!

I misunderstood the Vet regarding the first diagnosis of mast cell tumours and thought they were grade 2. Unfortunately, although the margins are now clear, the lump removed from her flank has come back as highly aggressive (the elbow was low grade). The prognosis is 3-6 months although this could be improved to 3-5 years if she undertakes a course of chemotherapy. So Monday afternoon we start the chemo.

Really sorry to hear this... and wish you well with the Chemo.. I lost Ollie to grade 3 MCT in November, and know what you are going through...

Good luck with the Chemo. You know, there are plenty of dogs out there that have had mast cell and it has never come back. Hope Winnie is one of them.

Sending healing thoughts your way... I had a dog with mast cell tumours, and she had 3-6 month prognosis. We made the decision to have her PTS around the 6 month mark. We were in no way able to do chemo for her. Hope everything works out for you :)

:( Im sorry that you didnt get better results Pedlee.  My dog had bone cancer 5 years ago and we opted for the rear leg amputation. She also had a prognosis of 3-6 months and although she didn't have chemo, she is now 12.5 so there are always exceptions to the rules.

As usual, Winnie was a little star in the Vets. Despite all she's had done she's still happy to go in. For the next 3 weeks she has to have repeat doses of the chemo and we've also got high doses of prednisolone to take as well.

She's absolutely fine in herself. Looking at her you wouldn't think there was anything wrong (apart from the give-it-away shaved patches and scars!). Will keep you posted on how she's doing.
