Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / To Scan Or Not To Scan ?
- By vikc32 [gb] Date 01.08.10 08:19 UTC
I had previously posted looking for a good mobile scanner , but having now read many posts on here and various other places , I am now a little bit concerned as to going ahead . A fair few people have commented that it stresses the mother and causes reabsorption of pups , and obviously I desperately don't want that to happen , but both my girls are maidens and dad was unproven so both myself and his owner would love to know if he has been successful . Any advice would be very gratefully recieved ... I didn't find a mobile scanner prepared to travel to me so am provisionally booked into vets for scan next Wednesday ... Many thanks .

There is absolutely no evidence that scanning causes resorption. It proves that resorption happens, but it's no more risky for a bitch than it is for a human.

so do you think that if it is going to happen it will happen anyway ... the only difference being that if she had been scanned you would know it was a reabsorption , not a miss . Are mobile scanners better than the vets ? My vets is a big equine and farm animal vet aswell as small animal but have always been fantastic in everything they've done for me in the past so I have plenty of faith in them , but I guess they don't scan everyday ... so excited about the prospect of babies , we've waited a long time .

Any reasonably competent vet should be able to confirm pregnancy with a scanner, but don't expect to be given a reliable indication of numbers; they can tell you how many heartbeats they can see at the time, but there could be more or less actually born.

Our mobile scanner is excellent, however he can only tell you what is there on the day, females can and do reabsorb no one really knows why, scanning doesnt stress them out or cause reabsorbtion.

Good luck, if you need hin number pm me.

Feeling much more confident about going ahead now ... whereabouts in the country is he ?

It's only going to do that if your dog is of a nervous disposition anyway.  It's not something I bother with as I've heard so many times of people being told there's nothing and then their bitch has gone on to have pups, sometimes a litter of normal or even bigger than normal size.

Yes , I've heard a lot of that too . My girls are happy little things and not much bothers them , although they aren't really used to the vets as they only go for routine vaccinations etc

I've never found being scanned to have an adverse affect on my pregnant bitches. The last one laid on the floor in the scanning room at the vets almost comatose.

Have pm'd you a possible mobile scanner.
