Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Critique My Dog Board
- By molezak [gb] Date 29.07.10 16:42 UTC
Following on from the showing in opposite direction thread.. would the mods consider a 'critique my dog' sub-board for the showing section?  What do others think?  Maybe a vote?
- By ANNM172 [gb] Date 29.07.10 17:09 UTC
Not meaning to be a spoilsport but what can you tell from a photo? Not for me I'm afraid...
- By molezak [gb] Date 29.07.10 17:18 UTC Edited 29.07.10 17:21 UTC
Not anything formal...obviously it can't be a thorough assessment just a bit of fun and interest??  Maybe it can only be confined to breed specific forums...?  It's a very popular board on another forum I go on occasionally

Would people be honest and truthful or diplomatic? How many would risk upsetting someone by describing their pride and joy by spelling out all the faults they can see on a photo of their pride and joy? And if they're not going to be honest what's the point? It'd only be an "Aaaw, he's sweet" fluffy love-fest!

Bad idea.... I agree you could never tell anybody what you really thought... thats why you go to dog shows

Not sure its a great idea as people will have their own agenda in most breeds. Some people are very canny and who's to say that someone in your chosen breed says its not a great example when it is and they are trying to put you off showing said dog/pup..
Also people commenting on your dog when they haven't a clue about your chosen breed.

I know its a bit of fun, but i'm not sure i'd want that. If I want an honest critique i'll get someone in my breed i trust to go over the dog, breeders and owner of the sire's should be the first place to start..

Lets leave it for the other forum?? :-)

Also a poor photo could be damning of a great dog and you know what the showing world can be like ...

Definately a no from me.. Without going hands on, or seeing movement, I dont think anyone could give and honest opinion.  Also.. unless it's a professional photo from someone with the ability to know how to photograph a dog in a perfect stance.. we would not be seeing any of the dogs at their best..

Edited to add.. just noticed your signature lol.. says it all really ;-)

I think the only reason this idea falls down, is that some would post thinking their dog is the best thing since sliced bread, and may not be able to take an honest critique.  I know the shortcomings with my dogs, even though I've never been near a show ring with them.  And my skin is so thick, I can take an honest assessment of them, but some people just couldn't, and would be upset by the slightest, what might seem, negative, remark.

I think that if an experienced  breeder has chosen their pick of litter they will be confident with its qualities and well aware of any weaknesses.
As an exercise for others to get an eye for the growth changes of other breeds - it could be fun.......

But if used for puppy picking, you may get such a variety of opinions from people not au fait with the finer points of the breed, as to render the exercise futile IMO.

I don't think it would work alas, which is a shame, as I said in the original post, I'd love to have some critiques on my puppy, even though it's too early to make definite statements of quality!

I once sent photos of a pup I'd kept to the stud dog owner and she said nothing. Then I took the pup to meet her and she was like "I am SO relieved you're a c*** photographer! He looks NOTHING like the photos, in fact he looks great!" And I thought I'd got some really good pics -just goes to show!

> But if used for puppy picking,

I have found digital photography and email/internet great for sharing photos and getting help opinions with people you know and whose opinion you value, and who are too far away to come and visit.

It is interesting how some litters everyone is drawn to one puppy, and how similar selections or opinions can be, even if the final choice is different.

Even though I am with pups all the time I like to photograph them all and compare them lined up, at various ages.

I find this a great help to compare development between different litters, and to see how pups turned out and how they looked as babies, is a help choosing ones of the same lines another tiem.

Thanks for the laugh!!  :-)

LOL can you imagine the debates.

I remember sending a group of 4 photos to people ( some of you who were on NW lab rescue may remember ) showing my new "puppy" I had breed. I called the photos A, B, C & D  I got about 20 replies each one giving their favorite puppy.   It was quite a laugh when I told them they were all the same puppy.

You certainly could never pick a puppy from a photo.. :-)

A friend of mine has a dog who pulls a terrible face every time the camera comes out   .. it looks like she's sucking a lemon!!

I'm fairly sure that she's learnt this is a very good way to make her owner put the camera away...

Maybe not then :-) !!

'critique my dog'  is run on another board I go on, and it works quiet well, as of yet, (it has been running a few yrs) no one has got upset with the critique, yes you get, the "isn`t her lovely"  comments, but many do give a good  honest critique,  you can be diplomatic along with truthful!!
- By tooolz Date 01.08.10 18:07 UTC
Jackbox why dont you start one and we'll see how it goes?

It either works or it doesn't.

Im happy to put one up of a pup or adult.
- By snowkitten [gb] Date 01.08.10 19:57 UTC
I think it's not a bad idea. Plus it gets people who are not in the breed to check the breed standard and in their understanding of it, give an honest critique on the dog.

I know it'll only be of a picture and we won't be able to access movement, etc but as my Nan used say..A picture speaks a thousand words.

Jackbox why dont you start one and we'll see how it goes?

Why would I need to do that??

As I am not part of admin, I have no access to the control panel on this board,  so how can I  make a new section??

I would have thought IF it was going to run, it would fit in under the   the "dog boards" (below  idles chat or  foo , or somewhere)   , you would have to open the section up for Photographs to be submitted,   and be  open to  members at any time.

How  could I start a threat for "critique my dog"  then no one could submit a photo!

Its not a job for  me to do, I was just giving my opinion to the query that "members may take offence"  at comments   on their dog,  I merely pointed out, that it can/does  work   very well on another board!!
- By tooolz Date 02.08.10 08:44 UTC
Never mind...just an idea.
- By molezak [gb] Date 02.08.10 14:12 UTC
If admin tried it, gave it a couple of months on trial and it failed, fair enough but maybe worth a go...
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 04.08.10 09:38 UTC
Jackbox could you pm me the link to your other forum, I might give it a try!
