I seem to keep asking questions these past few weeks, but I have another. One of my 7+ week old pups has come up with watery diarrhea this morning, only a couple of hours ago. I have given him acidophilus powder and slippery elm in an effort to tighten him up, and will take him to the vet today if I don't get results soon. The interesting thing is I had a bit of gastro last night. Has anyone heard of transferring a bug from human to animal before? I thought a piece of quiche I ate yesterday didn't agree with me, but maybe not. The slippery elm fixed me, so I am hoping it will work with the pup.
I have a litter at the moment 7 weeks old and have had one bitch in the vet overnight last night with diarreah put on a drip.We are awaiting sample results back tomorrow, the others seem fine but are anti biotics as a precaution.I have been fine myself, streesed and worried to hell, but no tummy probs but the vet did tell me that certain bugs such as camplobactor and samonella can be transferred.I do have free range chicken so that could be a cause.I hope you're little one's ok,i know what a worry it is and also not wanting to send them off to their new homes with any problems x
The other pups seem fine, but my little one is now vomitting up the slippery elm. I put mum in with him to give him a drink, but he's thrown that up as well. He's quieter than usual, but is whinging now wanted to go to his litter mates. I'm watching for dehydration, but his skin is loose still. I'm not going to last long before I give in and have him looked at by the vet.
Sorry 'bucksmum', very thoughtless of me. I really hope your pups come up OK too. It's so worrying. xx
Well, I gave in and took him to the vet. He is not dehydrated yet, but is on antibiotics. I have to watch him carefully, give his gut a rest for a while, then chicken and rice when he improves. She said not to give him anything to bind him up, because he obviously needs to eliminate what has been in there. Cleansing, sort of. Oh the worry! They're all supposed to be off to meet their prospective owners on Sunday, but I'll have to hang on to him to make sure he's right.
Please don't apologise,i know what it's like ,your heads all over the place with worry and lack of sleep.
Hope he makes a quick recovery now he's on the antibiotics.
He's great! I've just fed him some boiled rice and chicken, and he loved it. He's also had a feed off mum, and loved being special with all those teats to choose from. He hasn't had a poop all afternoon, and is cheeky and bopping around as usual. I'm so relieved! You think about the whole litter crashing and on drips like yours........
I hope your little fellow gets a good result too.

My girl is a little loose at the mo, no dehydration and she is very bright and lively, it's coming out like toothpaste, but I'm assuming it's because we have started weaning. Also mum has a tummy upset, so that might have something to do with it. Am watching both like a hawk, any sign of dehydration particularly in pup and we will head for the vet. I seem to recall the last litter were a bit loose at this stage too. I'm more worried about mum tbh, we are starving her for a day.
We (human) have been hit with a stomach bug and so has our pup. I don't know who gave it to who but I'm sure it was transferable between us. When you think of all that cleaning up we do after pups you can see how easy it is.
Why though, do pups ALWAYS leave it until they are within a few days of going into their new homes before they decide to have something wrong with them. They can spend 8 weeks being robust, happy chappies but one whiff of them leaving and bang, you get the runs or something.
That's what has happened to mine; most are going on Sunday. I ended up with five getting it and all pups have been on antibiotics since yesterday. Some were losing just water tinged with blood. I was syringing honey and water into their mouths to keep their fluids up and slippery elm to coat their raw intestines. Thankfully none got dehydrated. They slept well all night after their second antibiotic dose and we have woken up to 8 beautiful playing puppies. I have fed them a small meal of chicken and rice just now and they have wolfed that down, so I'll cook some more for lunch. I did my first crying for years yesterday, it was so awful.....
Hello again Copespeak,
I have had a positive parvo result come back on one of my litter.Strange thing is she bouced back to completely normal next day, very firm poos and i had another sicky one yesterday vomiting blood tinged flem so she went in on a drip and was completely back to normal within two hours apart from slightly loose stools. My vets are suspicious of the positive parvo result as it is not classic parvo symptoms and we are now doing a more reliable test but have to wait until thursday for results. At this moment all puppies are absolutely fine but none of them are going anywhere until after the final test results.
Sorry if it seems i'm hijacking your thread,it's just does sound a bit similair to yours.Did your vet give you any idea of cause? Mine have tested clear for campylobactor and samonella which i was concerned about as we have free range chicken.
There does seem to be an awful lot of canine gastro viruses about at the moment which is bad enough bt this positive parvo result has left us completely heartbroken.
I really hope your litter are improving, did you pups have a temperature? Mine have not.
Stay strong,
Hugs Ali x
How awful for you! Parvo is a nightmare. No, mine have all come good, thank heavens, and are tearing round the pen as I write. None were tested and the antibiotics obviously knocked off whatever bug it was. I would think because I had a bit of gastro the night before our first case it was something to do with that.
They've been on chicken and rice for two days, which they love and the first poops are coming through clear. I'm in Australia and there are horror reports of parvo killing litters here too.
They're off to be viewed today by prospective owners and we have just got them well in time, but I think I will advise people to keep up the bland diet for at least another day, and they have their antibiotics to take for a few days yet.
I hope yours stay well and it's not parvo. Sounds like you got it in time as well. xx

> but I think I will advise people to keep up the bland diet for at least another day,
I would be postponing them leaving for another week. I would want to be supervising their diet myself.
As to diseases being transferred from human to canine, and vice versa, yes it definitely happens. I picked up Campylobacter visiting another breeder. It was urgent enough for me to be hospitalised, as my temperature had hit 39.
Although I had very young pups at home, I was fortunate that my dog sitter agreed to stay and look after the gang. I'm just glad that I wasn't around to take any infection in to my own dogs.
We let the ones that didn't get sick go to their new homes and I still have others until tomorrow and onwards. All are well, thank heavens and the new mums and dads are ecstatic with their babies. It was a worrying few days though.
