Hi can any one tell me the pros and cons of this vaccine my giant breed missed last season and has just came back into season so i wondered if there s no side affects should i just go for it ???????? x
I have used this a couple of times. First time with a bitch whose mother was notoriously difficult to get in whelp. I didn't want to chance things with her daughter so had the herpes vaccine. No side effects from the jab and a lovely litter of eight healthy pups.
Also used it on another bitch with no 'previous' but, although I got her in whelp, she lost three out of seven pups with what I would have said was fading puppy. However, in her two later litters (without the herpes jab) she lost four out of six and finally all of the five that were born. She obviously (according to my Vet) had problems far beyond the help of a herpes vac.
The bitch who had the vac successfully is in whelp again and has had the vac again. I'll let you know the result (due on 14th August). I would give it a go. For me, the worst that could happen is that she misses again. With hindsight, I wish it had been available when my girls mum was of breeding age. I'm sure it would have helped.

We have used it on our bitch with no ill effects and 11 healthy puppies

We have used it a few times with no ill affect

We too have used it several times and will use it every time with future matings, our last litter was 8 strong healthy puppies.

I had it for my bitch who had reabsorbed her pups at 6 weeks. When I mated her again I was advised by my vet to give the CHV which I did and it was a disaster [or could be coincidence] but my bitch had a dreadful whelping :( She had 4 pups, 2 mummified, 1 dead and 1 live pup who was blind in one eye. I'd never used the CHV before and won't be using it again.
I too lost a whole litter when my bitch had been scanned at 5 weeks for " a large litter" - my vet will not talk about numbers. In the end there were 3 dead puppies delivered and I could not believe it and was devastated. I was also advised to use this jab and have had 3 litters since then. One from the bitch who lost the puppies, ( 7 live and well puppies ) and then one litter from each of her 2 daughters. I always use it now as a precaution but have lost 3 puppies, 1 at birth and one two weeks after birth. I have not put these down to the vaccination but who knows I suppose. I believe it is a "live" vaccine and there is a window between which live vaccines should not be given. I do it up to 10 days after mating and within a week of whelping.

My bitch had the CHV vaccine ... last year my young lad suddenly became infertile following an upper respiratory tract infection - that covers a lot of options. All my dogs had it including my bitch. It would have been completely bonkers of me not to have considered the CHV jab.
She produced a very fit and healthy litter of 6 pups 4 weeks ago. Will I use it again? Yes I will, because I know something drastic happened to my young lad and I'm not willing to take the chance that whatever affected him didn't affect my girls. As far as I am aware, having done research and talked to people, there are no risks with the CHV jab.
Edit: We had the first vaccine the day following mating, the 2nd vaccine was planned for 10 days before due whelp, but was 12 days before due whelp date.

I have used the CHV vaccine for every mating since 2004, none of my girls have shown any side effects. all have gone on to produce good strong healthy litters
edited to add.. I still use the orignal timelines of when the vaccine was 1st licensed in the UK.. 1st Vacc withing 24hrs of mating.. 2nd, 2weeks before due whelping date..
I know the timelines have change slightly but and there are differences of opinion as to when the injections should be.. I stick to what was advised by Merial when we 1st began to use it :-)
