Hi guys, i'm new on this forum, i was recommended by a friend.
Can someone please advise me on the injections that puppies get, Why have i been told to keep my puppy indoors till 7 days after his 2nd injection? i have never heard of this before, all my other dogs were to wait 24/48 hrs but never a week.....
Thanks for any help in advance :)

Hi!  Puppies get the first injection (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Leptospirosis) at 8 weeks of age, and repeated between 14 and 28 days afterwards. They don't have full immunity for 2 weeks after the second injection, so should ideally be kept off the ground outside your own property until then, especially if there has been an increase in the level of disease in your area (some areas are seeing an increase in parvovirus at the moment).

Good advise, the last couple of pups I have(in the last 6 years) have been at least the same time frame.

Many years ago(back in the late 70's/early 80's) the 1st jab wasn't given until the pup was about 12 weeks & then a month after for the next jab, so the pup was very old when it was allowed to go out. So glad that jabs have improved as they have to allow pups to get out & about sooner.

In well over 40 years with dogs I have never, ever heard of waiting 24/48 hours!!
It has always been 2 weeks after the 2nd injection.  Taking a pup out after only 24/48 hours is putting them at great risk.

Thanks for all your help, my vet said 7 days after 2nd jag, should i wait the 2 weeks as most of you advise instead?

It was a vet that said 24/48 hrs as the injection would be in there blood stream by then, none of my dogs have ever been ill due to this and have lived long healthy lives. I would NEVER put my dog at risk for no good reason, hence the question............

I think you also need to look at the area you live in. A dense canine population would make me more wary and leave it just a little longer before taking pup out on the ground..

My pups walk out of the vets after 2nd vacc.. and are at classes same evening.. I would not dream of doing this if I lived in a large town or city...

15 years ago I remember having Megan vaccinated at 12 & 14 weeks and than had to wait a further 2 weeks before taking her out.. now jabs are 8 & 10.. and out the door they go :-)

In the area I live in my vets have always recommended getting my pups walked up and down the road after their 1st injection (very quiet cul de sac), I have always done this with no ill effects.  As long as mine have had their first injection then they start their socialisation...visiting friends, coming along to the training classes that I run and being carried around alot with little tiny walks outside the house - after 20 odd years and 17 dogs they have all been fine.

I'm going to go against the general advice, whilst I agree, don't let your pup wander around areas where other (possibly unvaccinated) dogs have toileted, it is vitally important, imo, that you don't miss out on the window of socialisation.  Carry your pup out and about with you if necessary, but get it used to meeting people, vaccinated dogs, hats, wheelchairs, walking sticks, children running and screaming.  All of these are normal everyday sights and sounds to us, but completely alien to your pup.  The next few weeks for your pup are very influential, it is when your pup will form it's opinion of the world about it, if you like.  If that world doesn't contain hats, bicycles, wheelchairs, pushchairs etc, when it does finally come into contact with all these oddities, you will very likely hit a set back.

All manner of creatures pass through your garden carrying goodness knows what, the main thing you need to watch out for is unvaccinated dogs and their faeces, so avoiding popular dog spots and grass verges will keep you away from the major risk.  If you have a friend or two with vaccinated dogs that are good with pups, then get your pup round there to learn a few manners.

I'm not saying get your pup out there on a lead and walk it, but do get your pup out with you, in the car if necessary, and get it used to all sorts going on around it. If your pup is apprehensive, just let it view these things at a distance, don't shove everything in it's face at once, but do let him/her see these things, so that they are just part of normal everyday life.

I have and always will start taking mine out a week after the last one.  Never ever heard of 24 to 48 hours though!

That's not been recommended ever, to my knowledge. Some vets say 7 days, some 10 days, some 14 days, depending on the level of disease in the area at the time. Never less than 7 days though.

Of course you can take them out in the car, carry them around (provided it's not a great dane or something!), even put them on the ground on the beach between high and low water (that ground is thoroughly washed twice a day!) so that they don't miss out on the vital socialisation.
