I have had ago at some home grown salad this year but i dont know when they are ready to pick out! Particularly radish and spring onion how do i know they when they are ready to use??? are there any signs i should be looking for?
thanks
You can see when they are ready! They are ready when they reach the size you want. Easy as that!
How odd, it's my first year growing veggies and this morning I have just pulled out some radishes, the length of the foliage was about a foot and some of them had flowered but the radishes were so wee!!!! To compensate, I had the most amazing carrots on Sunday and I wonder what on earth the shops do to them to make them so tasteless. Am planting more radishes and hoping for a better result!!
well mine have only got 2 set of leaves at the moment and not even 6 inches high yet, so definately need longer.
Not sure how i can see when they're ready as the bit i need to look at is under earth!
The top of the radish usually sticks out of the ground. If you can't see the tops, then they aren't big enough. Usually. ;-) I've only had about 3 or 4 that I have been able to pick and eat so far this year.

I grew radishes last year, from memory you can see the tops of the red raddish which should give you an idea of size. they only take about 6 weeks from seed to eating (again from memory).
I've had a lovely year of it so far, peas, runner beans already eaten & going strong, french beans, blueberries & strawberries & courgettes (for the dogs - a tip from my vet for one of my lab's dirty habits, not sure it's working though :-O)
Courgettes for dirty habits? the mind boggles!! I was warned to watch the courgettes very carefully before they got too big, yesterday they were fine, today they are marrows :(
I have tons of toms but only me eats them, can I freeze them, anyone know? if not the dogs will be getting lots of them in their veggy mix.

Tomatoes freeze brilliantly, but they're best skinned first. Put some into a bowl, pour boiling water over them then, using a spoon to avoid scalding your fingers, pick eack one out and peel off the skin. They'll be superb for cooking with.
Thanks Jeangenie, it would have been a shame to waste any.
You caould make pasta sauses with the toms before freezing.

I went away for the weekend & came back to a huge "marrow", gave it to my friend this morning for her dogs. Not sure if the courgettes are working for the poo eater, but maybe it's the veg filling her up that has stopped her quite literally "scavenging" :-O
