Hi all , just wanting some advice. I have a 16 week older boxer puppy who is gawjus and when we brought him home he was chunky bubbly and very mischievious just as a boxer should be. Last week I wormed him with bob martans wormer. My puppy then started to cough like a chokking and was bringing up white bile he also had loose bowl movements. since this my lil puppy has lost weight. Following advice from a friend i have took my puppy to the vets today who advised me to change his food from bakers to more premium food which i have now bought james wellbeloved, the vet also said that he did not have worms and gave me another worming tablet to give him just incase. Since coming home from the vet this morning my puppy has vomited which he has not done from over a week. Could this vomitting be from the vet wormer ? i am getting really worried that there may be something else wrong with him !!

The common big brand wormers make nearly all dogs in one of my breed vomit.  But this will only happen once half an hour or so after having the tablet.  You say your boy has been losing weight for over a week, going to a different vet for a second opinion is always a good idea.
Remember extra treats whether human food or disigned for dogs are likely to upset a puppies tummy.

Hi Henrieke the vet gave me Milbemax wormer and i gave him that about 12ish then he started to vomit about 4 the only treats i gave him is some of the wellbeloved as the lady in pets at Homes told me to introduce it slowly to him and start to ween him of the bakers. yes he was chunky when we brought him home and we have only had him 3 weeks now and he seems to not have as much of the puppy flubber that he had 3 weeks ago which is slightly worrying he is still bubbly around the house and plays with my daughter fine. I really wanted to show him eventually and i have been told he has good BONE !! not quite sure what this is but it seems to be important

Thanks

You are definately better to give a puppy of that age a better quality worming programme than the over the counter sort.  JWB is a good food too compared to Bakers.

I have 2 x 12 week old large breed pups and the bitch is fine weight wise, but the dog has gone gangly and I have upped his food quantity again. They are fed on Royal Canin large breed Junior and have other stuff like mince etc too.

I have wormed them up to date with Panacur 10% worming liquid, which kills the round/tape worms and their larvae too.  Alot of the over the counter wormers just kill the worms.

He could be having a growth spurt, so if he is happy in himself, I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. Just make sure you are giving him the right quantity of food for his age and size.

Hi Justine , Thanks I just feel so stupid that i might have caused his weight loss from buying over the counter wormer. I am feeding him 530 gramms a day on the puppy food , then it says that from 6 months he will need the junior food he ate his last meal at 6 and as of yet he has not been sick he has since been to the toilet and it was loose again how long will it take before he gets back to normal toilet wise ?

Thanks

Upset tummies can take several days to recover completely, so don't expect too much too soon - but equally don't let things get any worse.

Natalie, dont worry :)  he could always have picked something up off the floor that caused him to have an upset tummy.  There are alot of threads on here about wormings so have read through some of those, they may help you.  :)

You could try some natural yoghurt in his food, or some pro-biotics to help restore the bacteria in his gut.  Hopefully now he is on a better quality food, he will start to put weight on again, once his tum settles.

My little chap hasn't got the poops, but is active too, so I'm now giving him abit of cooked lambs breast in his food to help fatten him up. That might be worth you trying, once you have sorted your pups tum out.

Pro-Kolin paste that you can buy from on line chemists is very good too for helping with the poops.   Men eh!!

As Justine said a tablespoon of natural yoghurt stirred in each meal normally clears up upset tums.
Have fun with your pup, and I'm sure you will both enjoy the showing world!  If you haven't started already, when you are happier with your puppy's health make sure you get over to some ring craft lessons.  You may even come across someone of your own breed that can help you in more detail with feeding advice for your boy.

Didn't the pups breeder give you some advice on feeding?  You should have been given an information sheet on how many meals a day etc.

Most reputable breeders would have been feeding a high quality food, and would have told you to keep puppy on food that he is used to.  Did you change the food that the breeder recommended?

Hi , The breeder had the pup on james wellbeloved but i had not heard of it so i just started him on bakers thinking that he would be ok on it as when i was younger we had a boxer and he was on bakers and he was fine on it.
I have now gone and got the james wellbeloved and have started weening him on that he has not been sick since the other night so hopefully he wont be anymore fingers crossed !!

Just for anyone else reading.

No matter what you eventually plan on feeding a  puppy a sudden change in diet will almost inevitably cause them to have an upset tummy.

Not surprising really as they will have already had the stress of changing homes, different water, vaccinations, worming etc.

A good breeder should provide you with a diet sheet and some of the food the puppy has been reared on, and I suggest that this is continued with until pup has had a chance to settle in it's new home.

At this stage in their lives they are growing rapidly and you do not want to do anything to upset their development.

As for Bakers, it is not a food most experienced dog owners would feed, my main gripe is the sugars it contains which no dog needs, as well as all the colours.

Just to add to Brainless' point above.

A note for new dog owners: when you are researching breeders for a puppy do ask them about the foods they recommend.  It's very helpful to understand exactly what they feed and why.  Most can explain how they've arrived at the best food for their dogs and, sometimes more importantly, what not to feed :)

Many breeders will give you a small bag of food when you collect your puppy and may be able to sell you a larger bag at reduced rates (using their breeder discount or bulk buy rates) to keep you going until you find a supplier.

To the OP - do try looking at James Wellbeloved online - you'll probably be able to get it cheaper than in a pet shop.  Glad your pup is ok now
