Right here goes i will try to explain this, as some of you might know weve now aquired a DDB that was rescued by my brother in law, he's been with us 2 weeks now and he is fantastic, he gets on great with my boy (this was my worry at the beginning) and it almost feels like hes been here forever.

Now heres the tricky bit (or maybe not) the original owner, the one who wanted rid of the dogs (he was going to shoot them) had the pedigree papers from the breeder, he gave them to my BIL friend, who gave them to my BIL, who has now gave us the relevant one (god thats complicated LOL), now
he never even bothered to transfer the dogs into his own name, the paper work is all signed by sire and dams owners and ready for transfer.
Obviously ive got the breeders address as its on the paper work, but ive googled there name, the sire and dams name etc and nothing.

So should i write to them and explain? if they wanted him back are they legally entitled? if i was a breeder i'd want to know whats become of all my puppies, i wish i had a phone number so i could ring them and explain.

Sorry thats all so confusing!!!!

By the way the pedigree is of no relevance to us (i.e he wont be shown or bred from obviously)

No, legally they are not entitled to anything. So you've got nothing to lose really -just explain the situation, how attached you are to the dog etc -they might be really happy to hear from you. Even if they did want the dog back they couldn't have him unless you agreed, and it isn't YOU that has potentially broken a promise, but the former owner. My first dog was got in a similar way to this. The breeder wanted him back but wasn't informed he had been given to me. I contacted her and she was just over the moon on finding out the dog was okay. It may well be this breeder isn't interested, as you say you'd expect to find something when Googling, certainly show results for instance, but at least you will have done your best.

Hi there, first let me say well done for taking this lad in and pleased to hear he is settling in with you. As to his breeder yes I would write and let them know you have him,you have his papers so you'll be able to give dam, sire and birth details, you'll be able to explain how his original owner was a complete jerk!! and no they have no legal right to take him from you so dont worry.

Thankyou,

i want to do the right thing and let the breeder know, but that was my main worry that they might turn around and say they want him back (and that certainly wouldnt happen without a fight).

As for the googling of breeder etc i suspect that a pet owner thought they would have a litter, it might shock them to realise that they could of possibly had 2 pups returned, as any responsible breeder would have.

May be a very good idea getting in touch so they realise how unstuck their pup was, be really relived.

Might make them tighten up their vetting procedures or realise that there is more to breeding than selling the pups.

If you have the papers, i would send them off ASAP, then the dog is legally in your name.

I would write them a letter explaining what has happened , and that he has had a very lucky escape.  I'd also include a photo so they can see that your boy is now in a good home. I'm sure they will be happy that you have taken him and that you care , this should settle them , but also at the same time make them think twice about homing their puppies to the wrong type.
I'd also send off the papers and have him registered to yourself straight away, because at the end of the day he is yours now and they can't take him off you.
Well done for giving this boy a good home , they really are a lovely breed.
