my dogs have a dog flap and go out to the garden a lot. lately they have barked late at night and im wondering if i lock them in for the night, what if they need a wee? i could lock the flap at 10.30 but they may have not weed for hours, will they be ok?
i worry they will be uncomfy at night, after all- i pee every few hours!

hi,
how old are your dogs and what breed? mine sleep through from 10.30/11 till about 5/6 ish. My 8 month old manages till that time. Before at the time when i hadn't had him, my bitch who's 2 now slept from the same time till at least 7/8 ish.

My husband works shifts so times vary every other week. Either we let the dogs out last time at 10.30 pm and out again first time 4 am when he gets up (but the two noisy ones have to wait until 7 when I get up!), or last time about midnight and first time around 6.30 am. I find they always lets us know when they want to go out, no chance to oversleep. My youngest is 5 months.

wow a dog flap, i dont think i could get one big enough for my newfie puppy lol.He has his last wee at aprox 11pm and then he goes out at 630 am weekdays and on weekends(if the kids are tired)830am,

I have a dog flap which is great in the summer and also winter months for them to use at their leisure. They have managed to kill the actual flap, so we now have a hole in the door with the flap frame, but hey it works..
Mine go out at 10 o'clock at night and don't get up normally until well after 7 o'clock, sometimes 7.30 if I don't need to get up for daughter. Though with the lighter mornings we have been getting up earlier. :-)

at 6 and 8 they should last all night... maybe just give it a go? try it over the weekend just in case you do need to get up...

we have a dog flap however when mine go to bed they only get up when I do,but they have last duties about 10,30,its the biggest dog flap that is made even i have used it when I forgot my key,but back gate is 8ft and padlocked,i feel much happier when i go out as in any emergency the dogs can get outside into the garden.

My dogs have their last wee between 9 - 10pm most evenings and then go out around 7am in the morning. My most recent pup is now 10 months old and she had the same routine from 8/9 weeks old...exactly the same as the last 17 dogs we've owned and never been a problem. I don't like the idea of mine being in and out of the garden whilst i'm asleep, anything could happen.

Mine go out last thing at 10.30 or so, and then not until we get up at 6.30 or 7am. If they ever need to go out during the night (a tummy upset, for example) they ask and are accompanied outside. I certainly wouldn't let them go in and out at will at night when I'm asleep, for their security.

I'm sure if you get up early they will be fine from 10.30pm
