Topic Dog Boards / Health / Advice Required - he's not going to the toilet
- By Goldenoldie Date 16.07.10 22:13 UTC
Hi,

I have a 3 year old retriever who had diarrhea about 4 weeks ago.  It was so bad to the extent that he went to the toilet in the house.  This isn't like him to do this.  It cleared up and then came back again last weekend.

I therefore took him to the vets on Tuesday and they said he had swollen intestines and his temperature was a little high, but nothing to worry about.  They gave him an anti-biotic injection and he is currently on Amoxycillin anti-biotic capsules.  The vet advised me to feed him chicken and rice for 2 days then put him on his normal food, which I did at tea time today (his normal food is James Wellbeloved dry food).  I've done as advised by the vet and he's due for his check up this Thursday coming.

I'm worried though because he hasn't been to the toilet since Monday.  He's happy in himself and he's eating, drinking, urinating and playing as normal. He is going to sleep at night earlier than he usually would though.

I'm considering ringing the vets in the morning as I'm worried that he hasn't been to the toilet.  Is this normal?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance

When mine have had diarrhoea it can sometimes be a couple of days before they will poop again. Their bowels have been completely emptied and then they are on a reduced diet for a couple of days after that so it's not overly surprising that normal habits are disrupted. However, I would start to become a wee bit concerned after 3-4 days if they still hadn't managed even a small poop.

If I were you, I would call my vet for advice in the morning if he still hasn't been.

Yes :)

Ohhh, the worry I had after my pup had the runs - it was 5 days untill he did a poop - I was worried sick!! I found out (think I got some reasurance form this forum), that yes, it is normal for them not to go to 'loo' for a few days following a bout of the runs.

Hi,  thanks for your feedback.

I will ring the vets in the morning for their advice and peace of mind.  It's like worrying about children!!

Kind Regards

Yep, worth doing to put your mind at rest.

Fingers crossed he'll go to loo in the morning any way - what a relief when that happens, it sounds strange but the next 'loo' he'll do will brighten your entire day :-)

Your'e not wrong... it will brighten my entire day if he goes!!  He just popped outside and he must wonder what's going on....me watching his every move outside just to check whether or not he's gone.

Fingers and toes crossed for in the morning.  They can't tell you can they.

My oldie has been on Amoxycare capsule for a urine infection and has been constipated. The vet told
me to give her chicken and brown rice and a slug of olive oil.
So far not much progress!
Any 'movements' with yours today?

Thankfully he went to the toilet when he woke up this morning.  The first time since last Monday.  I am so relieved!  Can only imagine he is too.
