I keep struggling on what some of the abbreviations that's used for the dog breeds on here. I worked out jack russels (JT/JTR) and presume everyone owns a german shepherd (GSD) if that's what it is ofcourse.
Any one care to list any they know.
It can be quite amusing sometimes reading about some breeds and having an imagination. Feel very thick at times.

Thanks for the replies, there's lot lol. I definitely wouldn't have worked some of them out.

What confuses me is when people write GS. Do they mean German Spitz or Giant Schnauzer? Could make a big difference LOL.

I tend to write Mittel or Klien if i am referring to German Spitz..... that said, I get annoyed when people just say Spitz given that a "spitz" isn't actually a breed but a type.

Don't forget the PAPS! - Papillons!!!

Pom's Pomeranians
SWD Spanish Water Dog PDAE - Perro de Agua Espanol.

Newf - Newfoundland
Dobe - Doberman
I think Rottie, Lab and Goldie(GR) are self explanataory?
Dane - Great Dane
Saint - St Bernard
Flattie - Flatcoat Retriever
We could almost have a list for most breeds
Swissy - Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

NSDTR - Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
>What confuses me is when people write GS. Do they mean German Spitz or Giant Schnauzer? Could make a big difference LOL.
I always see GS as Gordon Setter ;-)
I suppose it depends on the group you are talking about :-p
LM Large Munsterlander
ES English Setter
ESS English Springer Spaniel
OES Old English Sheepdog
I always see GS as Gordon Setter ;-)
Aaarrggh now there's 3!! ;)
RR - Rhodesian Ridgeback :)
that said, I get annoyed when people just say Spitz given that a "spitz" isn't actually a breed but a type. Same when people say Retriever -that really irritates me. I always feel like asking whether they mean Golden, Labrador, Flat Coat, Curly Coat, Chesapeake Bay or Nova Scotia Duck Tolling! In fact I have done and that shut them up LOL.

Chi = chihuahua
I confess I am a culprit using Spitz I now consider myself corrected and will use correct term in future lol
i suppose its the same when people say collie, i automatically assume border but it could also be rough, smooth or bearded!

Well, as the owner of a Spitz I am always half relieved if my hounds are called Spitz rather than GSD or Wolf. Don't really mind that they do not know which breed.
> Spitz rather than GSD
Ahh so not a shepherd. lol. What does the 'd' stand for. I always think it's just dog lol.

Apart from labradors and I may be wrong most of the retrievers names are reduced to the letters so FCR is Flatcoated Retriever or like Labradors reduced to Labs.
Wss = Welsh Springer Spaniel
Ess = English Springer Spaniel
Fields = Field Spaniels
OES = Old English Sheep dog
PGBV = Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen The small basset breeds like this one always confuse me!
peke = pekingese

Because I can never remember what the letters stand for early in the morning before my brain is in gear!!! lol
I was thinking about a show I stewarded years ago not feeling great and had just completed a two hour drive to get there and the first breed in the ring was the PBGV, then the bigger version and followed by Fauve then the basset...... too many basset types too early! lol

Is see, a bit like me when I am trying to remember what a Field Spaniel looks like, suppose it depends on what group you are most familiar with I am not phased by the basset group but the retrievers cause me to think hard and I still make mistakes.

PBGV :-D not PGBV :-D and you should see the looks we get when we tell people what breed ours is :-) . We usually end with 'big name for a wee dog' and 'its a French hound' , followed by blank look and 'Oh' from questioner, quickly followed by 'she is sooooo cute' :-D :-D

Pyranean(sp) Mountain Dog..> PYR=?
I thought that but then thought had it wrong. now that's sneaky using the beginning fo the breed. I'll never catch on lol.
When people use the abbreviation 'springer' I often feel like asking if they mean English or Welsh ;-)
And then there's Welshie, or Border. Which do they mean? Welsh Springer/Terrier or Border Collie/Terrier?
I think we are just supposed to stay confused :-p
Ooo heck. Now there's a GDV. Which one's this. lol.

GDV? Isn't that an abbreviation for 'Gastric Distension and Volvulus'; ie bloat?
