Topic Other Boards / Foo / repairing dents in wood

I know this has been covered before so apologies, I can't find the topic. There is a dent in the door of my pine kitchen unit. Previously I'd tried a steam iron & damp cloth, this only succeeded in making the varnish bubble up & look even worse. What else could I try?

I would imagine fill the dent with wood filler then rub down and re- varnish or stain

How do you repair a wooden door that youngest Flattie has scratched and chewed after bathroom door shut on him trapping him inside!!!
Oh and an expensive electric razor that hubby had left next to sink!!!!

Is the unit totally wood or does it have a plastic coating?
I did ask a family member and they said if it has a plastic coasting then it wouldn't ever come out, but should do with a lot of steaming on it with an iron and cloth between it.
But just re-read it and see that its the varnish which is causing issue, hmmm... Will ask again shortly and see what they can suggest if anything.
Also this will bump it back up

It's varnished pine Sue (& really soft wood, totally inappropriate for dogs!) I think the floor fan tipped over & dented it. Any other repairs I've attempted (like with cloth & steam iron) make it look worse. Now, did the other suggestion involve a hairdryer?
Think I'll start a new thread - what's the best dog proof kitchen.

Use pvc glue and fine pine sawdust to make a filler, it will give the best natural effect, none of the ready prepared ones are any good, imo.  Are the units painted?  Or natural pine?  Apols if I've missed this somewhere.

Options are:
Either sand down what you have to get rid of the varnish, then do the steam with a wet cloth/towel and revarnish or use a wood filler..
