Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / food for the older dog?
- By saga Date 10.07.10 19:04 UTC
Hi I have been feeding my GSp girl James Well Beloved Turkey & Rice for about 7 years.
She has always done well on it -good skin & health. Her teeth are ok (recently examined by vet) but of late she seems to have become very fussy about what she eats. I have always put a little extra something i.e tuna, scrambled egg, or raw minced meat, with her dry JWB . But she even turns her nose up at that.
The only way I can get her to eat the dry kibbles is if I throw handfuls into her basket!
She is now approaching 9 years old. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of some food that she could try which was a bit more tastier. Maybe Bakers? I have been looking through the threads on this feeding forum but not really come across any ideas. Thanks

Could it be the heat affecting her? Lots of animals are off their food at the moment.

Hi Jeangenie,
Yes it could possibly be the heat, but she does appear hungry (always begging for treats) which she doesn't get if she hasn't eaten her proper meal! It seems that her "taste buds" have altered -maybe I should put her on "wet" food!?

I'd stay away from Bakers if I were you, full of additives and loads of rubbish fillers, artificial colours etc.

A good wet food may be an option, something like Naturediet or add raw tripe to her dry (very few dogs will turn their nose up at tripe, it's just the owners that dislike the smell!).

Hi Pedlee
Didn't think Bakers had a good write up! Don't like the colours in it but it does look appetizing!
I'm googling Naturediet now! thanks

Should a dog food look appetising to humans, when you think about it? And then consider tripe which would be top of the menu for almost all dogs, which human beans find rather hard to cope with! lol

BTW a friend had a student lodger who played hockey at Uni tournament level, and guess what the team all ate for energy during away matches....? Bakers dog food! Absolutely full of uneccesary sugars, too.

If you do need to use a commercial (supermarket) food many people swear by Chappie, or the canned "Butchers" Tripe which is surprisingly free of additives.

I can imagine----students-----lol hmmmm
I bet my Rio would love the Bakers.. but I'm not going to attempt feeding her with that. Not with all those sugars. after all a girl's gotto watch her figure! lol
She use to have Butchers canned meat b4 the JWB & her skin & fur wasn't too good on that- so is not an option.
What is ARden Grange like?

How strange - it just shows how all dogs are different..... I fed Butchers canned for a while and my dog's skin and coat looked wonderful! (It does say on the tin that it contains natural Omega oils).

My elderly gsd has had JWB turkey and rice all her life, but she also stopped eating it, in fact she would only eat enough to stay alive out of necessity and not usual pleasure. She has inflamm. bowel disease so I have to be careful what I feed her. I tried her on the CSJK9 dog food, just the Champ adult around £9.75 for 15 kg plus some of the Heal herbs on top and she loves it and now eats well. I am giving the heal in the hope that her IBD will stay calm and 8 weeks down the road she is well and enjoying her food again ( and saving money as well although this is not the reason for change )

Hi Sue That's very interesting -my gsp has never really liked JWB. Never actually finished off any meal even if I put something nice (usually human food) in with it. But as her condition & bowel movements were always good I tried to keep her on it.
However today after reading other's opinions on this forum I tried mixing JWB with Butcher's Tripe in jelly (1/2 can)
She smelt it from the far corner of the house & the nose went into the dish... the tongue didn't finish until the dish was off it's stand... sides completely clean. Well this is the way a dog should enjoy it's food!!! lol
Anyhow, although it will prove a bit expensive I will endeaver to continue with this method. (that's if tomorrow's excretions are ok!!!)
Have googled CSJ dog food but I can't find a supplier near my area.
Thanks for your input!

Glad to hear that you have achieved a solution to this problem with your gsd & wish her a long & healthy life!

I have them sent directly to me from the CSJ website, the delivery cost is the same for 2 x 15kg bags as for 1, and still worth the money, also my dogs condition has improved and coat is good now.

Personally I wouldn't touch Bakers.

My oldest Dobe girl who is 9yrs old is on Vitalin Senior and Lite ( life stages range ).  She is doing really well on it, beautiful coat etc.So well that she is still competing in the show ring, bless her.  My Mum also feeds her 11yr old Rough Collie on it with the same results.  I also mix Nature Diet in it

I never got on with JWB, gave all my lot bad coats.  But you have entered a minefield when it comes to food, coz every dog is different.
