Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Dobe Breeding Restriction
- By LadyG [gb] Date 12.12.02 20:49 UTC
Hi folks,

Just wondering if I can pick your brains for a minute or two. I bought my male dobe pup 18 months ago from breeders (first timers). When I sent off for his KC papers, they came back stating that his progeny were not allowed to be KC registered. This was not mentioned to me at the point of sale, which although it would not have changed anything, it would have been nice to have been told with the reasons why. I bought an American Beagle pup the same day and he had no such breeding restrictions.

Let me make it clear at this stage that I have no intention of putting Hugo up as a stud dog. However, he is an entire male with seemingly impressive breeding lines (to a novice) and if I were ever approached by a reputable breeder asking for his 'services' I would like to have the option of being able to consider the request.

Is there any reason why the breeders failed to mention this? Is it a logical and sensible manouvre to stop ignorant breeding of this potentially dangerous breed? And is there a way of lifting the restriction should it become necessary?

Let me assure anyone who is panicking that I will not allow Hugo to go out and impregnate half of dogdom if they supply an answer!

Cheers

It's just the breeder safeguarding against people who are intending on impregnating half of dogdom. It's very tiring having a litter of puppies around maybe they just forgot to mention the restrictions I'm sure they weren't trying to mislead you. The breeder can remove the endorsement if you contacted them and they approved the mating, after all it is their name going on the resultant puppies pedigree. It's quite common for breeders to do this nowadays along with export restrictions.

Best Wishes

Thanks Clair, I thought as much. I doubt Hugo will be doing any impregnating in the near future with his current toe problems anyway!!!

hi lady
to cut a long story sort if you did not sign a contract with you breeder you can ask the kennel club to lift them if no contract between you and the breeder the kennel club we lift them ask for the info department breeders can only put these endorsments if they tell the new owners and they sign a contract to say they no.i done it adout a year ago.

Did you not know about the endorsement when you bought your dog Siber? :-)

Thanks for all your posts chaps.

Clair, Hugo's registered name is Burning Corral (nice!) He's out of sire, Amazon Dark Angel (JW) who I think is supposed to be rather good and his dam is Special Gem. As I look at his family tree going back five generations, he's got 20 relatives that are supposedly champions of some sort with the prefixes of CH or CH WRLD or GER CH or DTS CH. I'm not very clued up on this sort of thing - perhaps you can help to explain?

By the way, Hugo's got to go in for an op on his paw this afternoon, it turns out he's trodden on something and it's stuck in there about in inch up and is infected. All is sorrow here, but I managed not to cry in front of the vet! Hugo did though, like a giant baby!

Hi Jaime

Just a thought, why not get his hips x-rayed while he is under the anaesthetic then you will only have to pay extra for the plates and examiner's fee and not for the anaesthic which is the most expensive part? If you do then take his registration document in as they will need this before they do it.
Hope they get the foreign body out easily and that he recovers quickly

I seem to remember going though part of his pedigree last year when I gave you links to some photos of a couple of his ancestors - will check out some of the titles later and let you know

I was just going to suggest that Christine :-)
I would take advantage of that anaesthetic too. Hope Hugo is ok Jaime :-)

Hi folks,

Hugo's back and in fine fettle - the vet thinks he trod on a nail that went in head first, the nail must have fallen out straight away but it managed to chip a little bit of bone whilst it was in there, poor lad. He's all bandaged up and on antibiotocs, no walks for a week.

Christine, I've only just read your post about getting his hips X-rayed so unfortunately we've missed the boat on that one. Is this how you get the hip score? And what do all the Ch & CH WRLD prefixes mean? I've still got those links that you gave me, it's amazing to look at his relatives and see all the similarities!

Roxi, thanks for your input, as I said before, we've got no intention of putting Hugo out to stud, I was just being curious. I wasn't aware that as owner of the sire you may have to take in his un-wanted pups etc so that's very useful to know! One of Hugo is quite enough for me thank you!

Many thanks for all your help and concern.

Hi, just a quick note, I always put Breeding restrictions on my Dobe pups, to try and put a stop to ignorant breeding.
You can either contact Hugo's breeder and ask them to lift the restriction. The KC requires that breeders must advise new owners of the restriction and get them to sign something to confirm that they have been told about the restriction. If this is not done then you can contact the KC yourself and they can lift the restriction for you.

But please do think very carefully before you use him at stud, and do get his health tests done first.

You must be prepared to take in any pups that he sires that for whatever reason need rehoming, and if they can't be rehomed Can you Keep them?
All the best for now

Hi, hope Hugo is feeling better after his operation. The Amazon kennels are very well known in the Dobe world :-) if you type in Amazon +dobermann in a search engine you will be able to see lots of Amazon progeny and some of Dark Angels.

Best wishes
