Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Judging dogs in order

I went to  a show yesterday just to watch the judging and one breed I watched the judge asked for the dogs to be judged in catalogue order where as  all the other breeds I saw let people go in what ever order they wanted . Just wondered why this  was done as I have not seen it before?

It is sometimes done in numerical order although I can't see why or how it helps the judge. It does stop the nonsense of not coming into the ring because you don't want to be first or barging past people because you do. The judge should not know the catalogue order because they should not have seen one but they can see the numbers so they can request that they are in order, without a collecting ring this IMO is a waste of time better used to judge.

The challenge is usually done in class order and in mixed classes the 'table dogs' will usually be judges first or last.

i was at a ch show and the judge wanted every dog in our breed in every class to stand facing the same way when we stacked dogs up for judge to view

In a breed that has one profile more flattering than another I find that from the judge as an exhibitor annoying.

This could be that a dog has more flattering markings one side than the other, or as in my breed the curl of the tail and the tip will show better one side than the other, giving a more complete picture.

My three most shown girls all stand the opposite way around to the way you move round the ring.

Could it be that these judges were from the USA?  Both of these practices are the norm over there - you enter the ring in catalogue order, and all dogs are shown facing the same way.

I know what you mean Barbara and it confuses the dog a bit if you try to stand it facing the wrong way, can understand if a judge wishes to have it face a particular way when the put their hands on but in the line up it really serves no purpose.

Think exhibitors should be allowed to show their exhibit to its best advantage, in fact I think it is their duty to do so. Also think a judge should be able to judge a dog against the standard which ever way it stand.

If in a numerically large breed, it helps both the judge, steward & ringsiders find which exhibit is absent from the class. The judge is supposed to mark off in their judging book who is absent, most judges do rely on the steward to mark absentees though

Here in France dogs are judged in catalogue order and that is in alphabetical order of dogs name, this is to help the judges and stewards when writing the critique on the correct paperwork.  The only thing I don't like is that the dogs have large cages to stay in, I like that, but the cages are in number order and your dogs aren't kept together, if you get there early enough you can move the numbers of the cages so that your dogs are together otherwise it can be a problem.

At General champ shows in the uk the dogs they are number alphabetically by owners name so if you enter 2 or more dogs they are benched together.

Oh gosh so do I, I've had that on 2 of the last 3 occasions - highly annoying and means setting up the dog all over again when you had them standing perfectly!  I wish they wouldn't do that.  In our breed it is often the case that the wrong side is more flattering than the right side.
