Anyone know. :)

Their hounds and behave like hounds, friendly, disobedient, noisy, adorable. But like any other dog they are individuals so can be very houndy or not so at all. Which particular breed are you thinking of.

My uncle had this breed his whole life.  Thing that annoys me is they are becoming on of the 'toy/handbag' breeds which is ridiculous.  These are hounds which are bred for working.  They are active and stubborn but they are fabulous characters!  I don't think this is a breed for the faint hearted.  And typical hound, if they get a scent, you don't see them for hours!

i would also add that the 3 coat varieties have 3 different characters in my opinion.

My aunt who i am posting for likes the wire haired.

I'm biased, I like those best.  They seem to have a terrier streak, right tykes.

Oh I love the Wire Haired!! Seem to have a bit more of a "zippy" personality than the others ( or the ones i've known anyway ). Can be a little attitudal at times , and tend to do what they want to do if given the choice , whereas the others tend to just go along with anything.

But they make me laugh and have adored every one i've met! :)

I agree, the wires seem to have the biggest (and most challenging?) personalities.

Does that mean they are not ideal as a first dog Jeangenie?

It depends on the potential owner's personality; are they intelligent and empathic, and happy to learn new skills in other aspects of their lives? And do they have 'time'; will learning about the dog take priority or will the dog have to fit in with what they can spare?

They're gorgeous characters.  There are 2 sizes, standard Dachshunds and Miniature Dachshnds and they come in three coat varieties, short, long haired and wire haired. I have only ever owned long haired so I am biased towards them especially the males.  They are beautiful to look at and unbelievably loyal.  They tend to be one men/women dogs but they are very protective towards there human family. They are rather stuborn as are all hounds but compared to a lot of dogs they are very easy to look after.  As long as they have walks, food and loads of love they are fantastic family pets.

They are absolutely lovely.  My friend owns a male standard wire haired and he is now 12 and has a great character.  We have always owned GSD's and Rottie's and my mum wants to downsize and has just put her name down for a standard wire haired Dachshund for next year :-)

The way my grandad always used to describe them is: a big dog in a little body

Sorry to have to say this but my neighbours have 3 wired haired daxies and I hate them!

They drive me insane, they are so reactive to their environment.  If they are outside we cannot move in own garden, near our house, wash our cars, open gates without these going into barking overdrive.  Everything we do is met with noise.  We have to pass their property on our way out and they go ballistic, barking and boundary running, clamouring at their fence, trying to dig under it, smash through it ect etc.  Luckily, the neighbours go away a lot, especially in summer to their 'holiday home' and we give a sigh of relief.

This is one breed I wouldn't give house-room to!
