Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / What type of husky can I expect?
- By guest [us] Date 13.12.02 03:22 UTC
Hello,
I saved a puppy from a young mother.
The mother is dry mouth St Bernard/very friendly 140 pounds.
The father is a 120 pound black husky/ I do not know much about the father.
What type of husky's are this large?
I would like to teach this puppy to pull.
Would this br a good combation?

I wuld really appreciate any input. I was orginnaly going to purchase a tibetain Mastif. Do you think they could have close to the same temperment.

Thank you

Hi sherry,

Huskies have plenty of good and bad points it is always difficult to know about crossbreeds though, (especialy an odd combination like yours :-) )

things to be aware of though, huskies cannot be allowed of lead safely (I have seen people loose crossbreed huskies too by thinking this does not apply to them) a husky has an in built instinct to run and run he can be 20 miles away before he realises you are not right behind him.

Huskies can kill small pets (another instinct) they can accept the family cat as part of the 'pack' but they can at any time turn on a small pet.

I am not sure about how you go about judging your pups food intake or finding out about aneasthetics as huskies (purebred) have a slower metabolism than most dogs they require less food than dogs of a similar size, they are also sensitive to aneasthesia and need an understanding vet.

sorry sherry I know nothing about St Bernards and it is difficult to know what a cross will be like, good luck sherry.... try having a look at the siberian husky club of GB website to get a better idea of the husky traits you are likely to be dealing with...

(I cant get over the odd combination of husky and st bernard.. do you know if it was an accidental breeding or had the owners set out to breed?)

again good luck
:-)

sherry I forgot to say that huskies chew and dig they take pleasure in wrecking your house and digging up the garden

Sherry.

Huskies also, sing (very loud) for no reason at all 1 of my huskies does it all day while he is eating, going for a walk, having a fuss on the settee etc etc..... They have a bottomless well of energy that needs to be channelld into something positive, (walks, attention playtime etc) before they destroy the house. Amazeingly they do not eat a lot of food for there size.

Like Kitty silly said while they are under anaesthic (sp) there blood preasure drops a lot lower that a normal dog. My huskies have a anaesthic called Rapinovet, which costs more that the usual anaethic given at the vets.

It is a very unusual combination you have, Could you explain how it looks (colouring, eyes size etc). Have not a clue about st benards so you may have a few of there personality traits in the dog to. Although the two breeds are both working breeds. I guess it would be good if you wanted to work your dog.

Good luck

If the husky was 120 pounds, it more than likely was an Alaskan Malamute.
As St Bernards are used to pull wheeled carts, and Malamutes originally (and still do) used for sleds in arctic conditions, I would expect that your puppy would be well up to pulling when it is mature enough physically, which will be when it is about a year old. Any younger and you could end up damaging growing bone.
You could also use a back pack on the dog. I do with my Mal and very useful it is too! This again shouldn't be done until 9-10 months old and even then, the pack must be virtually empty. My 15 month old is now just up to 20-25 pounds of weight for a very short time, and won't be asked to carry more until he is completely grown at 2 years old. It is going to be very useful next showing season - less for me to carry :D.
