I have a very poorly Lab here at the moment.

She was fine on Sunday morning and mid morning went rapidly down hill.

She is normally like Tigger and is a bouncy busy girl but went to lethargic depressed and uncomfortable girl not interested in food or water.  She was also very restless at first and was up and down trying to get comfortable. She was sick a couple of times, mostly bile. I called the emergency vet and we talked over her symptoms and I had concerns it might be bloat but she showed no signs of an extended tummy and I picked her up from behind and she showed no signs of discomfort.

She perked a little yesterday morning but she showed signs she wanted to drink had a few slurps but then it came up almost immediately . I thought she was getting over a stomach bug but by the afternoon she had gone downhill again. I took her to the vets and he gave her a good examination and agreed he didn't think it was bloat and couldn't feel anything in her tummy. She had a high temperature. He was concerned as he knows what she normally like and with the symptoms and the temp didn't know what it could be. He gave her a painkilling injection and some Boscopan to see i that would settle things and some re hydration fluid. He said that if she was still like this today I was to bring her in straight away and he would start further tests.

Anyway she is still as bad this morning will not drink or eat so will be taking her in.  Wish her luck and lets hope it is nothing too serious.

Hope you get to find out what it is and she improves quickly.

Is she going to the toilet OK, not that she will have much to get rid off? It sounds very like the symptoms of  a blockage from eating something, I have had three in the past year, one dog was twice in three months. I know vet couldn't feel anything but the object is not always obvious. Does she have a history of eating things she shouldn't?
The symptoms I have had in each of these cases have been throwing up water straight after drinking, bringing up yellow bile at other times, lethargy, stretching neck and head upwards to try and relieve pain, and when vet has taken temp it has been very high.
Hope it's not but I would certainly be looking to have an x-ray at least to see if anything is there that shouldn't be.
Good luck with her.

Warm healing vibes.Hope Betty gets well soon.

Poor betty, hope things get better for her.

When mine are poorly like that and won't eat, i found putting a little honey in the water and take it her seemed to help.

Hope you find what's wrong.

She is very poorly and on a drip and will be operated on once she stabilises. My vet finally felt what could be an obstruction so lets hope they get it out and find that she doesn't have too much damage. I remeber that she had been eating a whicker hurdel stick she had pinched on Friday so lets hope it hasn't punctured any of her bowls.

Keep all your fingers and paws crossed for her please :-)

Sending positive thoughts to you and Betty x

They have operated and it was a corn on the cob stuff fast. She has scavenged it out of the bin about 4 weeks ago and two had passed out but we didn't know how many she had eaten and as she seemed ok we thought they had all come through her ok.

She is still very poorly and  very dehyraded. Her electrolytes were dangerously low so she is still on a drip and has had some potassium to try and get the levels back up. We have got to ring in a few hours for an update.

These animals hey what worry they put us through!  :-)

Aaaw, poor Betty I have got everything crossed for a speedy recovery for her.  Corn on the cobs in the park are the bane of my life.  KFC seem to sell them on long wooden skewers which makes them even worse for the dogs scavenging.  The dog I knew that ate them and needed operated on, went on to live a normal life again so hoping for the best for Betty.

Me also.  So glad they found what was wrong with her.
- By LJS Date 06.07.10 17:20 UTC
Just got her home and she has been through the wars poor little girl ! Stuart ny vet has said that if she had been left any longer the outcome may not have been so good.

She is very quiet dosed up on morphine and doesn't want any food yet. I will wait until later and see if a bit of scramble egg may tempt her. The recovery food they gave her has been polished off by Cinammon the cat that had the accident that was in the vets a while aog soi think she may have got a taste for it ! :-)

Anyway she is home and want to thank everybody for your good wishes :-)
- By Goldmali Date 06.07.10 18:48 UTC
Really glad to hear she's home! :)

Glad to hear she is home. Get well soon Betty!
- By Justine [gb] Date 06.07.10 18:59 UTC
Aww glad Betty is home.  Chappie (tinned) is very good recovery food for tummies that have been operated on.  Soft and easy to digest and slightly more pongy to tempt them!
- By STARRYEYES Date 06.07.10 19:20 UTC
so pleased she is back home with her mum .

So pleased to hear this.  What a lucky girl Betty is.  :-)
- By LJS Date 07.07.10 05:14 UTC
She is still not right. She was still been sick last night and still very flat.I am just about to try and tempt her with some food with all her medicine but if she refuses then I think I will take her back.
- By JeanSW Date 07.07.10 07:11 UTC
If you have any doubts whatsoever you are right to go back.  Everyone here is rooting for her.
- By flattiemum [gb] Date 07.07.10 07:51 UTC
Glad they have found the cause and treated it. It takes a while to get back on their feet and they loose so much weight and condition. Hope all goes well from now and she is soon bouncing around again, mine has just started being an idiot again a month after his latest surgery.
If at all worried get her back to the Vet, she may need more or stronger ab's to fight the infection caused by the foreign object.
- By Tigger2 Date 07.07.10 08:21 UTC
Oh flip Lucy, I was still hoping that it was a tummy upset :-( Anyway, very glad that the op went ok and it was caught in time - imagine that cob being in there for 4 weeks! I hope she picks up very soon, sending eating (sensibly) and healing thoughts from here.
- By Perry Date 07.07.10 12:06 UTC
Oh Lucy, sorry to hear Betty is still not right, but it is early days after the op so could be the anaesthetic still in her system making her refuse food.   But you are right to take her back if you are not happy with her progress.  Good luck and keep us posted x
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 07.07.10 13:49 UTC

- By Whistler [gb] Date 08.07.10 12:02 UTC
Just got back from Hampston Court flower show and read this any news on poor Betty??
- By LJS Date 08.07.10 12:16 UTC
Sorry everybody have only now been able to get time to post an update.

She is a lot better in herself and has started eating but she is still been sick. I have an appointment at 6 to get her post op check over so will see what the vets says. It could of course be the AB's and metacam that could be causing the sickness. I am going to ask him to take some bloods as well as want to make sure her blood count is going up and her electrolytes are stabilising.

I am sure she is out of the wood now and it will jst be getting her strength back up. There are a lot more wags than a couple of days ago which is always a good sign ! :-)

Thanks again for all your good wishes :-)
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 08.07.10 13:36 UTC
Oh poor girl, these greedy dogs do put us through it!! I have a scavenging Yankee and I've always been amazed he has managed to digest his ill-gotten gains so far and not ended up at the vet. Hope she is feeling better soon!
