Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / dog food tested on animals

Hello, can anyone help please.
I realise that JWB has been taken over by Crown Pet Foods. But does this mean that now their foods are tested on animals. Have googled this but cant find an answer.
Also does anyone know about Pets at Home own brands too. Thanks

There's a list of companies complying to the old BUAV scheme here:

http://www.uncaged.co.uk/petfood.htm

and a more extensive listing on the PETA site:

http://www.peta.org.uk/features/non-animal-tested-companion-animal-food/

I've never bought JWB as I'm not aware of them ever having been included on one of these lists. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your post. However there is no mention of Crown Pet Foods. So does that mean I have to assume that JWB is tested on animals??

I don't know, I guess it could be that they've not bothered to reply to any requests for info about testing. I have to admit I've assumed that they do test, but I think if it's something you want to feed, and it's something you're concerned about the only way to find out is to contact them direct. If of interest, I did a spreadsheet exercise (yes, I'm really sad like that ... I love spreadsheets, well, most of the time) and they came out more expensive to feed than Burns!

Sorry can't help any more. If you do contact them re testing I'd be interested to hear their response :-)

Does anyone else find it a bit strange that dog food wouldn't be tested on animals ie dogs?

I think in the past many people have had a huge problem with puchasing dog food manufactured by companies that test other brand product on animals.. Proctor and Gamble for instance, test many of their products on animals,

But dog food itself, tested on dogs.. well, how else would you test it.. ;-)

Well, yes, put like that it would be very strange! :-)

However, some well known brands test their foods on dogs for less appealing things than taste testing! Some companies who produce foods for dogs/cats with kidney stones, just as an example, will actually induced kidney stones into an otherwise totally healthy animal, just in order that they can then test their foods to see if it helps it to clear up!

The problem I see with this is we can take things too far.. many dog food companies claim they do not test their food on animals.. and are correct in so far as they dont.. however, most of these companies do not actually manufacture the food themselves and use larger companies to produce it.. and it is those companies that do animal testing on various other branded products..

Not so long ago, I got quite fanatical, okay maybe not that fanatical, but it was a concern to me that I bought products such as these, and after I did a search.. I found that every single product, cleaning, toiletries etc were manufactured by companies who tested on animals, yet many of them (brand owners) claimed their product was not tested on animals.(which was why I bought them in the 1st place) . the body shop was a huge eye opener.. ;-(

that would be around 5 years ago, right about the time I switched to feeding raw :-)

Not at all! I don't want to buy a dog food that hasn't been tried and found safefor other dogs first!
