Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pup with possible Colitis
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 02.07.10 22:29 UTC
Hi,
Has anyone heard of Colitis in 13wk old pups...the reason I ask is because one of the new owners has taken her pup to vet as it was bleeding from bottom. The vet told her it was colitis caused by a sudden growth spurt and gave her some medicine for the pup for 4 days( she hasnt told me what medicine it is). I have never heard of a growth spurt causing this....the other 2 pups are fine..no health issues at all and up until now the said pup was very healthy. I see her quite often and she is very much loved and cared for as are the other 2.
She is on Wainwrights dry which is what the pups were weaned onto and the vet has said that its ok.

Any advice?

Did he/she have the poops aswell toffeecrisp, or just bleeding?

My aunties JRT was diagnosed with colitis but that was only after our Vet did an endoscopy and had a look into her bowel and intestines first.

I wonder if its an allergy to something in the food?

Have found that a change of water will effect a pups system and it could be that if he has the trots as well the bowel lining has become inflamed. Not sure what Colitis means, could be that it just means inflamed large intestine and bowel or it could be a particular illness, will have to look it up.

EDIT well despite the fact that I am eating my dinner I have looked it up and yes, it does just mean inflammation of the intestines so it is possible that the pup has it particularly if it also has the trots.

Apologies if I put you off your tea!!
No pup didnt have the trots...was just passing blood.
I have been in touch with new owner and pup has picked up really well.
She goes back to vet this week and will keep me informed.
I dont want to keep asking her how the pup is incase she gets fed up with me, but I am concerned and I just want her to know I care...but she is going to bring her down this week if shes better anyway:)

Pleased to hear the pup is picking up now, hope it turns out to be just one of those 'puppy problems' that seems worrying at the time but disappear never to be seen again.
