Nothing - they're just different words for the same thing; in the last few months the official term was changed to 'Kennel Name', possibly to avoid this confusion.

As fas as I understand it, when you breed a litter your kennel name (affix) must go at the front of the registered name (which is where the 'pre' bit of prefix comes from). When you bought in a puppy you added your kennel name at the end of the registered name, when it was known as a suffix. So basically it's just describing the position of the word in the name.

The new name for Affix/prefix is Kennel Name.

The difference between the 2 is purely where it is on a dogs name. Prefix is when the puppy is bred by yourself so it is called Summersun Pretty Girl..Affix would be the name you include on a puppy you buy in..Winterday Handsome Boy at Summersun.  The names are an example & not real names to try to explain, which hopefully it has.

But in the past (so useful to know if looking at old pedigrees) a breeder could have their kennel name at the end of all puppies they bred. Eg. I had two Goldens from a very wellknown kennel, Yeo. Going back in pedigrees all the way to the 1930s until the 1980s, all the dogs were named Something OF Yeo. When I bought my first dog from this breeder in 1988, she explained she now had to put the name at front due to new KC rules, hence my puppy was Yeo Legend rather than Legend of Yeo.

And, of course, if you buy in a puppy when you bred both parents yourself, you must put your kennel name at the front rather than at the end.

So, if you buy in two dogs from the Rvyita kennels (can you tell what I have on my desk?) and mate them together, you would then register the litter using your own kennel name - let's use Handbag as an example LOL.

So Ryvita Dad and Ryvita Mum are mated and produce a litter for the Handbag kennels. A pup registered as Handbag Puppy that is bought by the Ryvita kennels would then become Ryvita Handbag Puppy, rather than Handbag Puppy at Ryvita.

I've just made that worse, haven't I ... LOL.

No, as stated above your affix should be used at the start of the name (before the breeder's affix) when you bred both parents.

Do you know, I think I was right the first time!. If you sell a dog puppy and a bitch puppy of your own breeding to someone, they transfer both into their own name - when they breed one to the other, they would be the breeders not you, so their kennel name would go at the front and yours at the back
Maybe it is different in Germany to the UK ?

In the UK, if you are breeder of both parents and buy the pup in, you put your affix in front of the breeders affix.

Sorry, am not in Germany, it's just how it appears here due to the IP address. It is UK rules I am talking about.

Ignoring the handbags and ryvitas ...

I buy in two dogs, both with the same affix. (Affix1)

I breed a litter from these two dogs, and obviously register the litter with my own affix. (Affix2)

If the breeder of the two original dogs bought a puppy from this litter, they would put their affix on the front, NOT on the end - but ONLY if they bred both parents. Affix2 Affix1 Dogname

Anyone else who bought a pup from litter must put their affix on the end. Affix1 Dogname at Affix2
