Does anybody have any experience with this please.
Its interdigital, on one digit only. He is four years old, nuetered and as a pup to a yearling suffered with pyoderma.
So far he has had 6 weeks of Cefalexin, no progress.
So we had the sore removed and biopsied to diagnose it was in fact Furunculosis.
We carried on with the Cefalexin, two weeks after the biopsy and removal, it re appeared.
He is now fully through another 6 week course of cefalexin and started a 6 week course of Atopica 3 weeks ago.
The thing is the Cefalexin is working to only a point, its fighting it but then it re occurs.
The Atopica is an immune supressant, so all it will do is supress the cause not find out what that cause is and eliminate it.
I had the vet take bloods over a month ago as i have a suspicion he may be Hypothyroid as he has gained weight and is a bit moody and his hair has gone slightly brittle. The bloods came back as borderline so we did another one and has just come back as normal.
We read that coconut oil can work so are trying that now aswell.
He is fully insured so to be honest i don't care how much it costs as long as something can be done.
We have a good vet in fairness but they are fast running out of options. The next option is a high dosage of steroids which i'm not keen on due to the side effects.
Even in worse case scenario the toe is removed it would still not be gauranteed to be successfull as you are only removing the toe, not the cause so inevitably it could return in a different toe.
In the last week or so aswell i have noticed the thinning of hair on his left flank. I am not sure if it is to do with the meds (atopica) which initially he was extremely sick on so i spoke to the vet and we halved his daily dosage , or it is another symptom of what is going on.
We are wating for a referral to a specialist now but just looking for ideas really.
I was wondering if anyone else had success with it at all?

Has your vet run blood tests for allergies too?
Evening primrose is one of the best things you can give a dog for skin problems too :)
Hi, this will be our next step at the specialist.
How do you use evening of primrose oil?

I give my girls EPO capsules every day, Asda's own! Its much cheaper than places like H & B etc. It comes in 2 different strengths too.
EPO is good because its a natural anti-histamime :) Hope you manage to get to the bottom of the problem though.
Does anyone have any experience with Furunculosis at all?

Yes, my male has A.F we have tried everything! He has been on atopica for years and to be honest it never got rid of it only made it a bit better. Put a search in this forum for Anal furunculosis to find my previous posts as you may find them informative. My advise to you is to ask/tell you vet you would like to try Doxycycline along with or atopica or on its own. I attended a seminar with the GSD Health research and london vet school and it was there I was told of this drug. My dog is now AF free for the 1st time in 5 years, he has needed two courses of Doxycycline (10 days course) since last October and is now drug free and has a normal looking bum (asart from scar tissue) he is a very happy boy now, I had considered PTS as he was so uncomfortable before. The reason I say ask/tell your vet is because it is not common knowlegde this drug is so effective. Good luck and don't give up hope. x

ps
My boy was very sick on the high doses of atopica (current dose for Af is 2.5 times the does for atopy) we reduced the dose then gradually increased it to stop the sickness and retching and eye rolling (this was apparently unusual but I know it was this drug that did).
Thank you for that Barkingmad. Our appointment to see the specialist is on the 15th so i will definately ask about that drug.
Much appreciated

my male gsd was diagnosed with AF just over 4 years ago. Operated on by my own vet surgery, samples too "fried" for histology. Referal to VRCC in laindon, essex. He was put on cyclosporine,I am not sure whether was for 1 or 2 weeks prior to the op. Operated on by Prof.Rob White.when both anal glands were also removed as they were both infected. He has been fine since then,no drug treatment after op. I was told by my own vet that he would have to take cyclosporine (atopica) for life, which can cause the hair to grow and produce "lions mane" and problems with teeth and gums etc.,. Unfortunately Rob White is no longer visiting VRCC but I cannot speak too highly of the care and professionalism at this centre. I have had referal to them in last 2 yrs for cancer with my other dog. My dogs are 10 and 12 yrs, respectively, both in good health and full of life. hope all goes well for you and your dog. I would be interested to know the breed.
