Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Update: previous post / jrt pup supposed accidental mating!
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 29.06.10 18:57 UTC
A few weeks ago I posted about a situation of a JRT pup which belongs to a boys family in my sons class. My son is six years old.

Anyway the boy came in to school a few weeks ago beaming that his dog had had puppies next to his bed through the night ( 3 in total)
The poor bitch was on her first season and for what I could work out was about 8 month old. The dog is about a year old.
Well at the time I was angry and a lot of you gave advice about talking to the mother ( who works all day ) . I haven't seen her at the school once until last week when she brought the bitch pup which they are keeping.

At the weekend she was at a kids party where my sister was and she was talking about the pups , my sister thought it was an opportunity to try and educate her about the benefit of speying or neutering. She used her own as an example saying she is going to have her bitch speyed to prevent accidents . The mothers reply was , " well I'm going to advertise the two pups for £180 each and hopefully get a quick sale , then I'll decide what I'm going to do with her! "
My sister was gobsmacked and didn't say anymore. I wish I'd had the chance to reply , I was furious when she told me.

Fast forward to today , my mother went to collect my son and niece from school and the mother who has the pups was walking behind her and her phone rang . This is the conversation my mother heard ( clearly ) : "Yes I advertised them online , one day and they've both sold already!
As soon a she's finished Milking it will take six months and she will have another season! If he hadn't caught her right in the middle she would of had more puppies , I'm going to make sure he catches her at the end next time , then we'll have a lot of pups and get a lot more money. Oh yes I'm going to make as much money as I can out of her until she's at least four year old! "

I felt sick when my mother told me what she'd said , can you believe anyone could do this to their poor little dog , I wish there was some organisation I could report her to , because it is cruelty. They've kept a bitch and I bet the same will happen to her , poor thing.

Surely, under the new Animal Wefare Act, this is compromising the welfare of the bitch.  I would certainly involve trading standards, as they have the power to prosecute under this act.

I don't think there's anything any one can do..... If back-to-back breeding for years on end was illegal, then puppy farms would have been shut down yonks ago. And what's to do with Trading Standards? They aren't being advertised as anything but what they are - as far as we know - and there are no pedigrees or registration for JRTs.

The only thing one might be able to get this breeder on is licensing, but as that's only for more than five (?) litters per year, she's a way to go yet.

Benefits agency for undeclared income? Inland revenue? Far too easy for 'breeder' to claim accidental as there will be no record of an official mating and no paperwork.

Just another BYB free to do what they want, unfortunately.

Trading Standards bring all the prosecutions for contravention of Animal Welfare.  Even when the witness statements are made by government vets, it is still TS that actually take the case to court.  In my area of work, that could be prosecuting farmers for mating heifers too young.

By the same token, this bitch was too young to be mated on a first season.  So, it wasn't so much the back to back breeding I had in mind.  I naively believed that her actual age for a first litter would be contravening the welfare act.

With somebody as clueless as this, maybe it would actually help that she IS clueless? I.e. call the RSPCA and claim you know she's breeding lots of puppies and not looking after them. Make something up if needs be. No, nothing will be done, but she should hopefully at least get a visit, and that alone could be enough to set off some doubts. Especially then if it just happens to be spread around the school playground that "I saw an RSPCA van outside Mrs X's house!" or "I heard she was investigated by the RSPCA". Then the inland revenue, report her for "making lots of money from breeding dogs" -again unlikely anything is done but it's the scare I'm thinking of here. And perhaps the council making a complaint about noise? Except then a neighbour's address needs to be given which would be harder.

if this is one of the proscribed words my apologies, but this woman is a scumbag. How long before this poor girl develops all sorts of problems and then her owner decides she "needs to be pts."

Seeing as she seems to believe that if the bitch is mated at the END of her next season, it will give her more pups, let's hope she won't get mated at all!

what a horrible life for that little bitch.when my old girl was found to be in pup by accident i was devastated.i am giving the pup away to a known person as with no planning or health checks on dam or sire how can you sell on.if nothing else i agree report her to the taxman and if she is on benefits report to them.as they were advertised online it would be easy to prove

I agree this is tragic but wonder if educating the lady re good breeding practices may be better then reporting her. Im'm not sure the tax man will be overly bothered that she sold 2 pups at a few hundred pounds.
This has made me think though- How do you all alert the taxman to any income re puppies. My only previous litter had one puppy that survived so I didn't have to think about it. This time though there may be one that I sell. I often read on here people saying report breeder to taxman so want to get it right.

Sounds like they have tried and failed alas. Some people just don't get it. Had air con repairman round today and showed him my bitch puppy as he's interested in dogs, and his response to learning she was a girl puppy was something along the lines of 'Another puppy producer then'.

MarianneB you are right and that's exactly what I'd been thinking. I hope she doesn't let the dog near her until the end of her next season and she hopefully will of past the ovulation time.

My mother went to pick my son up from school again and :
In the school yard today she was there with the puppy again , and a lady took hold of the pup and said how lovely it was , the woman who owns the pups said " Sorry they are sold ! but there will be plenty more in December if you want one! "

Sadly I think this lady won't want advice , although if I hear her talking about them when I'm there I will be telling her she gives us that breed for improvement and do all health tests a bad name. And she can think what she likes!
This lady works for the police force , you'd think she'd have a bit more sense wouldn't you ?

Can you pick her up some leaflets re good breeding practice from the kennel club at shows and make her a wee envelope with a friendly I saw you had started breeding it can be a minefield. I wondered if these would help there's great advice.... Maybe she just genuinely doesn't know any better.

> .... Maybe she just genuinely doesn't know any better.

That is a nice thought but I expect ahe doesn't care.  Maybe you could tell the school annonymously that she is touting puppy sales in the playground.  Maybe they can stop her.  Or try and make the RSPCA act, if they don't bring it to the attention of your local newspaper.  I bet she wouldn't want that type od publisity for her pups.
