Hi, my girl had pups on Saturday and she's feeding them extremely well. She is panting a lot but I expected that and factoring in it's hot, I'm not unduly concerned.
She's having lots of small meals spread throughout the day, this is the puppy food soaked in warm water, so it's mush with meat or fish added. She's drinking plenty of water, but what she really likes is goats milk, she's having almost a litre a day. I'm assuming I can't give her too much of this? I was just wondering what other liquids to give her. She isn't on any calcium supplement, I'm figuring she's been on a good quality feed so shouldn't need a supplement.
I have got a tub of Nutro-Lac which I really got as a stand by ... 'just in case' it was needed by pups. Am now thinking of breaking into this as a change from fresh goats milk. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received, oh, anyone got a good recipe (easy!) for chicken broth? Thought that might be quite tasty for her. Many thanks

I am giving evaporated milk mixed with her water, just enough to colour it and add a bit of taste. She is not drinking much water but add a bit of this and the whole bowl goes. It has not made her loose either

I usually mix in a little Lactol to drinking water, as well as normal plain drinking water.. but have had a couple of girls who were loathe to drink either.. Emma used to love her Tea, and Tia welcomed her 'cuppa'... I just made up a pot of weak tea, a little goats milk, allowed to cool and they drank it all in one go.. just a couple of times a day.. keeping them hydrated when still not inclined to want plain water :-)
Thank you Annm172 & Kay. I feel an afternoon cuppa coming on. She downs my cuppa under normal circumstances so a weak tea sounds ideal! Thank you both :-)

I make my girls an egg custard, eggs, goats milk, glucose. they always eat that without fail.
Yum, will give that a go too, though yesterday she totally refused to eat her daily egg. The others are going to be so jealous ... they'll have to have just a teeny bit.

Glad you posted re tea Kay- Mine loves tea but I have been worried to give it whilst pups are so young. Will try her with a cool cuppa at bedtime- She will love you ....

I am not entirely sure tea is all that good for them Ann, (hence only a couple of times a day) but certainly preferable to not drinking at all.. and it never seemed to affect any of the pups..
My girl was drinking more than eating so i was giving her about 1/3 of a bowl of goats milk topped up with water and she would have 5 or 6 bowls a day. So just substitute half of the milk for water if you think she is having too much. As long as she can still taste the milk she should be fine with it diluted a little.

My girl's loving her goats milk, she will drink water with glucose but prefers the milk! I've also had scrambled eggs recommended.
I've made her some gruel suggested on a posting on here some time ago. She loves it ... actually, so do I!!
It's egg custard tomorrow ... just got to nip out for more eggs.
