One of my bitches was in labour just the shivering and on off panting.I popped in kitchen to make a coffee and a couple of mins later she came bombing in the kitchen with a look of 'there's something in my box...nothing to do with me...get rid'. She had popped out puppy and had no idea it was anything to do with her but after 'introducing' them again instinct took over and she was the perfect mum.

The same bitch has just had her second litter and this time she was great from the start.

I had one just the same with her first puppy; "Oh my god I've just pooed in my bed, I'm so sorry mum ... oh no! It's white and it's moving!!! Aaaarrrggghhh!" As soon as I picked it up and held it to her nose instinct took over and she was brilliant with all the others.

Oh bless them! My friend's bitch was like that, she hates squeaky toys so a whole litter of squeaky puppies that she was expected to spend time with did not go down well! Strangely a few years later when another bitch had puppies, this bitch adored them and even started producing milk! My own girl had her first litter 2.5 years ago and was the perfect mum. This time round we had to have a C section but as soon as I got them home and put her in with the puppy she immediately started licking her.

ROFLMAO Jeangenie, I felt a bit the same when my first child was born!

Lexi was absolutely terrified having her first litter, not just the first pup but the first 6, but they did come thick and fast, she was finished in two hours.

I literally had to hold onto her to stop her getting out of the whelping box and trying to hide in the gap under a double divan bed.

I had to make her lie down and she would allow them to suckle but she didn't calm down until all 8 were born (I lost one the next day, as it had got too much fluid in the lungs).  The first two days I mostly had to toilet them but from then on and other than that she was a model Mum.

She was much better with her second litter, though passing each puppy she did seem to react to pain more than most, and was a really excellent Mum again.

This time she had secondary Inertia after the first puppy was born, but had been very calm in labour, only getting in a panic after an hour or so after it's birth, which alerted me to things not going well.

My terrier bitch has whelped today and absolutely HATES her puppies!  I have had to separate her so she doesn't harm them and hold her down when they want to feed.  When I think she has relaxed and a puppy moves, she's off again!

Any advice would be much appreciated...

My girl was the same Ells Bells. I had to physically hold her down and put them on to feed. The stud dog owner told me to close all the blinds and make it as dark and cave like as possible which I did. She also told me just to sit with her and each time a puppy moved speak to her calmly and reassure her and really build the bond of trust. I praised her everytime a puppy moved a muscle and she didn't bolt. From them being born until me leaving her side was 48 hours straight through. I was exhausted. On one toilet trip out suddenly she had to race back fast and sniffed them for the first time. She is now tucking them in and allowing them to feed. She will help them wee but not poo and she has not started cleaning their bodies yet and this is day 3 or 4 - Have lost count of days and nights! Seems it's common in maiden bitches. I am starting to relax a bit more now but must admit to being on phone and text to a fellow champdogger rather a lot for support- Thanks Joan!

We had a thread a few years ago about a Husky bitch who reacted so badly to her pups that for the first week she had to be muzzled as she wanted to kill them.

Following advice from the Forum the owner kept at it,a and by a week the bitch had accepted her pups and they did well after that.  I think that was as extreme as I have heard about.

Not all bitches are natural Mums.

My breed are renowned for being good mums. I remember when one of ours had her first litter though, Mum's sister appeared terrified of her little nieces and nephews and remained that way until they were probably around 5 weeks old. I was concerned she would feel the same way when she had her own first litter... but when she did, 6 months later, her maternal instinct just kicked in from the moment they were born. She turned out to be the most loving and devoted mother I have ever had... .which was a pleasant surprise.

One of mine was an awful mum for the first few days with her first litter. She didn't want to be anywhere near them, hubby and I literally had to sit on her to get her to stay with them to feed. After 2 days one of the pups died and as soon as we removed him she went straight into the whelping box and got on with it.

She was obviously beside herself as she knew there was something wrong with him but didn't know what to do about it. As soon as he was gone her worry disappeared and she was wonderful. The only downside was that she went very protective, I had only heard her bark 3 or 4 times in her whole 2.5 years but she would viciously bark at any noises outside and would fly towards the door at the poor postman / anyone knocking. She did calm down a bit eventually but she is still a barker if anyone knocks at the door or if she sees anyone walking past the house and she had her litter 10 months ago!!!
