Does or has anyone got any experience with Crohn's disease in a dog please?
If so how is it treated and kept under control, and is it easily controlled?
thanks

Can anyone help with this question please?

I have very little experience with it myself, but my Aunty had a dog with Crohns. His was controlled by diet, whenever he had a flare up he used to go in on a drip and painkillers. Sill try and find out more for you. I do know that all he could eat was Butcher's tinned tripe meat, anything else would bring on an episode.
How long has the dog had it? Has the vet said that is what is is? As it can be easy to mistake it

I'm not saying a dog has it. Merely asking how its dealt with.
As far as I know they usually classify dogs as having IBD rather than Crohn's disease, so going on that basis they treat it with diet, and steroids at least in the beginning. My dog has IBD and has a salmon and potato diet plus various drugs to combat the inflammation and problems that were seen when he was scoped.
It is really variable as to whether it can be kept well under control, I am currently experiencing some problems and have never had an easy ride with him- yet the changes seen on his biopsies were mild. The vet is surprised he isn't more stable than he is, having said that we pick up very quickly when he's ill and he no longer suffers to any degree. He hasn't been hospitalised since the beginning few months as we act on the first signs- so his overall quality of life is excellent and he is a very fit, healthy dog.
It's difficult to know what you are thinking or going through from your post- but we had some very dark days in the beginning- I refuse to keep a dog alive who is in pain and bleeding from both ends- it was awful, all I can say is we're miles away from those days.

thanks Porridge for your reply.
I was just making a general enquiry, not stating that a dog has it. Just really wanting to know the symptoms. How much worse than IBD or colitits?
thanks anyway.
Colitis is a form of IBD, and it really depends on each individual dog as to the management. I would presume you'll get fewer problems with weight loss, and iron/vitamin deficiencies as most of these are absorbed in the small intestine, and very little in the colon. So I guess on that basis colitis would be easier to manage.
I do know someone who had a dog with colitis and he did very well, some flare ups, but he was treated with diet in the main.He died of something unrelated :(
Hope this helps.
