Just wondered if anyone else had this.

Recently I get these epidoes where I feel extremely dizzy. There doesnt seem to be any pattern to them and I can be stood or sat. It happened today at work. I was delivering a team meeting and suddenly went really dizzy. Luckily I was sat down because I think if I was stood I may have gone AOT! I had this about 5 weeks ago as well and I was stood then but my bf was around to hold my hand.

Anyone else experienced anything like this?
- By JeanSW Date 21.06.10 21:33 UTC
Yup!  It was the cervical spine that caused it.  After months of silly treatment at the doctors, I was at the end of my tether with it.

Thank goodness for osteopaths!
- By suejaw Date 21.06.10 21:36 UTC
You too??
Mine were like i was still and everything was moving away from me. The amount of times after i parked my car i had to push it as i was convinced it was moving, as in i'd left the handbrake off..
They have an idea what it is, but don't believe them..
I'd get yourself to the Dr's and get checked out tbh and keep knocking on their doors until you find something which either stops them or they come to a definate conclusion as to what is causing them and offer you something to get rid of them..

Its not nice and i had them for a whole year on and off, some days worse than others. Driving made it worse, walking up and down stairs - but not all the time either... Sometimes i would be sat down and it would start - like you no real pattern to it.

Yes - I went through a phase like that a couple of years ago, and it comes back if I get really stressed. I had all sorts of tests including an ECG, which found a slight heart murmur (when I got dizzy my heart felt as though it had stopped then restarted itself with an enormous thump) but nothing outside the normal range. It seems that, in my case at least, it's stress-related; delivering a team meeting sounds pretty stressful to me, so you could be suffering the same thing. (And of course the more you worry about the symptoms the more stressed you get, so the more they happen ...)
- By suejaw Date 21.06.10 21:45 UTC
I had a number of tests and scans except for the one i really wanted which was an MRI on my neck as i'm still thinking its damage there, ligament damage etc wouldn't show on an x-ray..
I did put a post on here about it last year at the time and got lots of ideas and helpful posts to put to my Dr as they were at a loss.
Tbh i've been having a few more spells recently, not as bad, but demanded to be seen by orthapaedic surgeon as i want this scan as its crazy to keep on like this.. If its the case of needed only physio i refuse to pay for it and the same goes for an osteopath, the NHS should foot this if treatment is required..

Reading online it states that dizzy spells are one of the hardest things to diagnose. The Dr's will ask how long episodes normally last and what feeling you get and how often they come on etc..

I do again mine is due to a cervical spine problem.
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 21.06.10 21:48 UTC
In October last year I was promoted for 8 months to Team Leader, then it got extended 1 more month, and now its been extended for 3 more months. Im in a managerial role but the term team leader means they dont have to pay me management money for the same resposibilities so I do have more pressure but I dont feel stressed?! I do get anxious - I went camping over the weekend and felt sick at night times. Thats when I get most anxious.

Hmm - might just take a trip to my GP (3 week waiting list though) and see what happens. Mind you - my niece fainted in a restaurant last week and they didnt even offer her a blood test!
- By suejaw Date 22.06.10 06:23 UTC
3 weeks, thats not on, say its an emergancy.. Or what others suggested last time, when you get the symptoms head up to A&E!!!
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 22.06.10 06:51 UTC
A&E isn't really the place to go.  Doesn't your GP do the emergency clinic first thing in the morning, where you phone or arrive there and get an appointment that day?
- By Nova Date 22.06.10 07:11 UTC
It is possible you are anaemic, I would say 48 hours is plenty to wait to see a doctor and I think a bit of pressure is needed to get an appointment.
- By Schip Date 22.06.10 08:45 UTC
It could also be allergies, I have a diagnosis of menieres disease bilateral ie both ears but this was formed after I'd been investigated for my neck injuries, issues associated with my adrenal problems and hormone problems.  Its only now that my daughters allergies are so serious and I've developed chemical sensitivities that they've started to look at allergies as a possible cause too, this has taken 10 yrs so far.  Daft thing is now I've had to stop all meds and tap water the time between episodes are getting longer, I'm hoping it was a part of my allergies but have to accept that its normal for menieres to go for upto 2 yrs then return so only time will tell.

Good luck and nag ya dr's

I was wondering about menieres too as my Mum has it although her attacks last a lot longer and she has to lie down and she also has tinnitus. Hers has improved now that she has decided that chocolate and cheese can bring on an attack so has cut them out. This has reduced the problem she also takes stematil

I would push the docs for more help and diagnosis if it is bothering you at least afull MOT bloods etc
- By Whistler [gb] Date 22.06.10 10:29 UTC
If its really hot you could have low salt levels. Whilst its not good for you some cut it altogether and it is needed when its hot. Try a bag of salty crisps and see if that helps. Plus get your blood pressure checked i have low blood pressure which is great for no heart attackes, but as a youngster I used to faint a lot.
- By Tadsy Date 22.06.10 11:35 UTC
Have you had a cold recently? I get Labrynthitis (sp), which is dizzy spells, I feel like my brain and eyes are not connected to my head, so when I turn my head they stay in the same place. It's viral and just has to go away on it's own.
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 22.06.10 19:04 UTC
Ive not had a cold recently.

I dont have any added salt in my diet unless obviously its a take away!

I dont want my GP to think Im causing a fuss over nothing as they are so infrequent.

The only other thing I possibly have as well is the occasional fluttering in my ears. Not sure if this is related but Im sure Ive read that balance and ears are somehow related??
- By suejaw Date 22.06.10 19:35 UTC
Get yourself to the Dr's as dizzy spells are not right even if infrequent.. Mine started like that and to the point i had them daily with a nasty headache plus more.

If you can nip it in the bud now do it..

If it is your ears you'll be referred to ENT, even if not and they refer you at least you'll know what its not rather than not having a clue.

i have had been feeling dizzy for a few days now, like i am falling backwards, and i feel like i my feet dont belong to me! Been to doctor who has given me some pills that have to desolve in my mouth and take hours to melt! I am also booked for blood tests on thursday, i think my doctor has ticked every box for testing! Tablets are a short term fix, and do help, my doctor is not sure what is causing the spells, but she suggested it could be hormonal, or crystals in the ears that need re settling which is easily done at an ear nose and throat outpatients.. My dizzy spells have been quite frequent, but as long as i remember to take the short term pills i am can at least get around without feeling drunk! :)
- By georgepig [gb] Date 22.06.10 20:56 UTC
I would also recommoend going to see your GP as dizziness is a bit of an umbrella term and there is a huge variety of things that can cause it - cervicogenic dizziness, artery occlusion, blood pressure, vestibular problems, BPPV (crystals in the ear being in the wrong place), neuritis, menieres, migraine, infection...the list is endless.

If you do decide to see a GP it may be useful to think about your previous dizziness attacks in terms of:
how long do they last when you have them
how often do you get them
can you think of any movements/postions you are in when it occurs
any associated ear problems such as tinnitus
any changes to your balance
is it a spinning or more of a 'swimming' sensation

as these can help point towards a diagnosis and may help your GP considerably.

I hope you get better soon :)
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 23.06.10 11:00 UTC
It could just be that you had low blood sugar which made you feel dizzy? Or low blood pressure?
- By bernesebaby [gb] Date 23.06.10 12:00 UTC
Ive had it and it's horrible , after some tests at the dr's he said i had vertigo.

whan it happenes its almost as if you are drunk.
- By SLF [gb] Date 23.06.10 15:15 UTC
Could possibly be panic attacks ?
- By maglaura [gb] Date 23.06.10 18:09 UTC
i have had the same this last week went to the dr and have been diagnosed with anemia aparently that can cause dizzyness. I have menieres and its not the same sort of dizzy but just as nasty
- By NDQ [gb] Date 23.06.10 23:51 UTC

> when I got dizzy my heart felt as though it had stopped then restarted itself with an enormous thump

I get that exact same thing. I haven't had it for a long time now, but when I visited the doctors about it, he told me it was just my age (I was 19 at the time), made me pay for tablets to take when I felt dizzy and sent me on my way!
- By Whistler [gb] Date 24.06.10 07:25 UTC
I was talking to my sons partner Sophia, her Mum had been off work with depressoion, but Soph and her brother were still worried.
To cut a long story short she went back to the Dr she has pernicious (sp) anemia and has been having mini strokes!!

So off to the Dr as quick as you can my girl and pester until you get a diagnosis.

Sophias Mum (55) is recovering well feeling better and will be able to go back to teaching very soon!!
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 24.06.10 12:20 UTC
I had another 'attack' today - lasted only a minute and felt like it came from my eyes (I was staring at the screen of computer), I felt like I was spinning and then went upside down.

Have got an appt for Tuesday at the docs! :-)
- By suejaw Date 24.06.10 12:27 UTC
As well as seeing the Dr do also get your eyes checked out :-)... I did too and no major problems, which was good and ruled something else out...

A friend of mine had the same symptoms as me and she was diagnosed with cluster migraines.. I put this to my Dr and he said not for me...

Thank goodness you have an appt that isn't so far in the future.. Just be careful when driving...
- By Whistler [gb] Date 24.06.10 12:35 UTC
Ditto re driving. Take care.
- By Gemini05 Date 24.06.10 13:19 UTC
I have been to have my bloods taken today, My blood pressure was taken and that was super according to the nurse, so just have to wait now for the results of the bloods.
I am still taking my pills as it seems to be controlling the dizziness.
- By suejaw Date 24.06.10 14:27 UTC
Zoe thats a great sign that the pills are working, did nothing for me..

Just had Hopi Ear candles and ear relexology, apparently helps with a whole matter of things, so going to see how over the next few weeks..
- By Polly [gb] Date 27.06.10 14:35 UTC
any kind of dizziness should be checked out, as it can be a symptom of a number of things from Stress to high or low blood pressure to something very serious like a cardiomyopathy, which can be fatal.
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 28.06.10 19:53 UTC
Yikes!! Got my appointment in the morning. Will see what they say!
- By Dogz Date 28.06.10 20:24 UTC
good luck.
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 29.06.10 10:07 UTC
Apparently Ive got vertigo. Had a blood test & urine sample. Got some tablets to take. Feel really lethargic today and my limbs feel heavy, also got a sore throat - not sure if thats to do with vertigo or the start of a cold?!? The doc asked if my blood pressure 'was always on the low side' and then checked previous blood pressure results but didnt say anything else about that. My dad has high bp so maybe shes happy mines low?

Anyway we'll see what the bloods & urine show (just hope it doesnt say Im pregnant - now that would make me dizzy!)
- By suejaw Date 29.06.10 10:26 UTC
Vertigo is another word for dizziness - sorry but its always confused with fear of heights with some people.
So lets hope something comes up with your test results.

I've been to the NHS physio and they have said i've got some form of nerve problems and want me to go back to my gp and request to see a neurosurgeon..It just doesn't stop does it...

Hopefully you won't be waiting for so long to find out what the cause is...

> just hope it doesnt say Im pregnant

OMG that would freak me right out too.. lol...
- By Dogz Date 29.06.10 14:45 UTC
My daughter has vertigo and is still being investigated for the cause.
She has severe nausea with hers  it is not just being dizzy.
Her description varies,  feeling like she is in a washing machine spin cycle and an attack can last from minutes to hours. As you can imagine it can be debilitating, she has had an mri scan which is clear and is now due to see an ent specialist, until a cause has been determined there is little we can do.

Karen :)
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 29.06.10 18:55 UTC
I have nausea with mine too. I fell asleep at 2pm for about an hour and I feel like I could drop off again. I hope something shows up on the blood tests just so I can wake up properly!
- By Dogz Date 29.06.10 19:03 UTC
Sounds like you are anaemic as others have said, I do hope they can sort you out soon.

Karen  :)
