Topic Other Boards / Foo / Poem for friend whos bf has been injured
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 23.06.10 10:47 UTC
Hi all,

I would like to find a suitable poem or quote to put in a card for a friend & colleague. Her partner is a marine who got seriously injured in Afghanistan, he's been flown home but in intensive care with life changing injuries. Want to let her know we are thinking of her but cannot express the words myself and cannot find much online. Has anyone got any suitable poems etc?

Thanks in advance.

I think just saying how sorry you are to hear the terrible news and then say you will always be there if she ever needs any help or just wants to talk :-)

If Ever You Need Me

If ever you need me,
I'll be right here,
To chase away the sadness,
And wipe away a tear.

If ever you need me,
I'll be two steps behind,
To follow in your footsteps,
And hear what's on your mind.

If ever you need me,
You'll never have to fear,
That your presence isn't important,
And your love isn't dear.

If ever you need me,
I'll always be around,
To bring back the laughter,
Where deep in your heart it's found.

You'll never have to worry,
For I'll always be here,
To chase away the sadness,
And wipe away a tear.

Im not sure how close you are to the girl but this is a nice poem.

Personally I find poems written by other people rather insulting, even though they're meant with the best of intentions. It seems almost as if the sender couldn't be bothered to write something personal; I know you don't mean it to seem like that but the risk of causing further hurt is high.

A short note saying how you're keeping your friend and her partner in your thoughts and sending best wishes for a good recovery would, for me, be far more meaningful than a copied poem. JMHO.

I would not put a poem in with a card, rather just a few well meant words from someone who cares, than a poem written by someone else FOR someone else..

Wishing your friends partner a speedy and full recovery..

Personally I would be devastated if I was sent a poem in those sort of circumstances.  Wouldn't console me in any way.

I would much prefer one line of sincerity.

From my own experiences of bereavement (I know this isn't), I'd say just keep it simple, sincere & heartfelt :-)

Thank you bernesebaby :-)

IMO finding a suitable poem is no different to finding a card with fitting words. As i said, i cannot express the words myself and everytime i put pen to paper i just cant write anything that comes close to what i really want to say. She is not bereaved but is going through a life changing time and knowing what she is like some motivational words that tell her they will come out of this the other side would be really fitting.

Thanks anyway.

When Mum died my husband read a poem that Mum kept in her diary"the life that I have ect...."
Years later (well 5) I found that peom below a lining paper in a chest of drawers that Dad gave me. I wept remembering Mum.

A poem can mean a great deal to a person when it has been given from the heart.

I have a copy in my diary of a poem on Rainbow Bridge "We have a secret you and I ect..." these words touched what I feel about my dogs but could never put on paper.

I feel the demissive words on this page demean the wish that Fred's Mum wishes to give to her friend.
We arent all the same folks.

I think a poem to say that at the end of bad times there is a new beginning you just have to have hope and courage is a beautiful gift to give to a friend carefully choosen words.

Im no poet I dont know what to suggest but a bit of encouragement rather than a message of being insulted would have been kinder for someone with a warm heart but not able to put that care on a card would have been kinder.

Very true. Fred's Mum knows her friend best and I'm sure will know how she'd feel.

I sometimes think someone else's words (for example in a poem) sum up what I want to say but much more eloquently.  I'd say it depends on the situation and the closeness of the sender & recipient.  If you can't find the words you want to say, why not borrow someone elses?  The poem above is lovely and I wouldn't be in te least offended if it was sent to me.
