Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / When can pups maintain own body heat?

We are in an Australian winter right now and I have 2 week old pups. They are in a heated whelping box with our house air con kept at 20 degrees C (68F), and have kept warm and snug. At what point does the heated box get turned off and they maintain their body heat?

The books say that they reach adult body temperature and can regulate it more at 3 weeks.

With my own breed I find by 10 days they don't seem to bunch any more, and I would only heat at night, but mine are a double coated Spitz breed who prefer it cooler.

Also depends if you have an open or enclosed whelping area.

They're large breed pups and are in my bedroom upstairs and very snug. They don't bunch at all and seem just right to me..... no open mouths or signs of overheating. The dam gets a bit warm sometimes.

Maybe three weeks is the way to go. Thanks for that.

Brainless would you use a heat pad in this hot weather for newborns? My bitch is so hot at the minute- not delivered yet.
If so would it still be on 24/7 or just at bedtime?

depends how warm it is in the box.  Very unlikely to in this weather, but might put it on at night if likely to be under 20'C.
