Rather late but I have been looking at getting my rotties insurance set up. I noticed someone mentioned axa were good on here, got a quote for £24 a month :o He is only a year old.

I just wondered if anyone with this breed knows of a good insurance company, as £24 a month is slightly too expensive for me, makes me wonder what they will bump it up to as he gets older too.

Not only this but I have had so many people think he is a cross, if he is the insurance drops to £11 - the same as my german shepherd cross. Although I made the mistake of not getting life time cover when I got her insurance - trying to not do that with the rottie. But he is down as a full rottie at the vets.

Thanks :)

Hi

I don't have your breed but I use M&S insurance which probaby won't come up as the cheapest BUT I've been very pleased with their cover.

Just a word of warning: DO NOT be tempted to lie about your boys breed to get cheaper insurance.  If he is a pedigree, and registered as such with the vet, then you will need to declare it on every claim form.  Your vet won't countersign the form if it's fradulent or may report the error to the insurance company.  If it got found out then you would need to prove he isn't a pedigree - is he KC registered?

It's a shame there is such a difference in pricing - I have this with my two also.  I put my pedigree on Premium but somehow managed to put my mongrel on Standard cover by mistake.  The crossbreed is waaaay cheaper for insurance but he just had a bill for a whopping £1500 for surgery in January and I had to pay £500 of it!! I really should have had him on Premium cover too...

They won't insure my breed so count yourself lucky. Also Rottie's normally come under, well they did for PetPlan as a highbanded breed - which is the same for many large breed dogs..
I actually think that is a good price and if it covers any condition for the life of the dog i would go with that. My breed are coming in at min of £50p/m.. If i could get £24p/m i'd snap it up if its good cover.

Don't worry, not going to lie about anything :)

That's what's annoying though, the rescue presumed he was a rottie, but practically everyone I have met has asked what he was crossed with - I have no background history on him at all. He could just be a slim lined more athletic built rottie but I suppose I will never know. So because the rescue said rottie that week he had his check up down the vets and we told them he was a rott lol.

£24 may be a good price, but I can't afford that - it's more than my car insurance. I've had a drop in hours, after we rehomed him, so things are pretty tight right now.

I think I am going to have to go down the road of not getting life cover and hope for the best.

Does seem unfair if he is branded in the bigger breeds, as I say I don't think he is gong to enormous. Yet you have my gsd x rottie girl weighing 6 stone and her insurance had only just gone up to £12!

Thanks for the replies though :)

Well that might be OK.  You don't have papers to prove either way...

Have a chat with your vet and see what they think, say you have your doubts about his parentage and explain about the insurance.  If they agree that he seems to be a crossbreed then you could be ok and it would be quite legitimate for them to change their records.  Vets quite like fully insured dogs so they won't be unsympathetic :)

Good idea :) I've got my gsd's check up due now, will have a chat with them then.

Thanks.

I found Axa to be the best for me after beingwith M&S for  a few years. When M&S renewals came in (and no claims had been made) they had shot up. Axa came in at half the price for virtually the same policy
When I cancelled the first M&S policy I wasnt even asked why!

I've looked at loads of insurance policies and if you are looking for a true "for life" policy where the benefit starts again each year there are relatively few policies on the market, and I found Axa to be the cheapest.
Another alternative is JLT insurance- it's called petguard, this is the link:
http://www.petguard.co.uk/

They are underwritten by axa,(so the same price) but by going through them you have the option to reduce the yearly benefit, remember to choose "annual cover" for life cover (they also offer a 12 mth limited option).
It's an easy site to use and you don't need lots of details for quotes- so have a look! Axa are known to pay out too.

Many companies say they are life policies, but actually only pay £x for a condition no matter how long it lasts, and I don't find them any cheaper.
I totally agree about the pedigree bit too, good luck.

I hope the link is allowed- if not apologies and please remove it (I'm new here!)

Thanks porridge, I'll give them a look later :)

Axa are really good and actually one fo the cheaper for the policy that they offer.  Given that he is a recue woith no history I would just ask your vets if they would be happy to put him down ans a cross breed and go for that with AXA. I really would urge you to go for life cover, if you are struggling to pay the insurance monthly then what would you do if something happened, it really is better to struggle a little bit more each month and know you are covered (beleive me I understand and really struggle with my lots insurance)  I added my latest rescues insurance on with AXA when My previous lot are with Pet plan and they all have exisiting conditions that prevent me changing but the diff in price is a lot.  My Dobe who is 5 is costing me £37 a month with PP at the moment.  Mt other girl that is on pretty similar policy with AXA is £14 a month.  But I have no savings and am self employed so I have to know that I can cover them for treatment in the event of an emergency or unexpected illness.  Plus if he is mostly rotie, they are prone to a few health problems so it really is worth it for them.

Hope you manage to get something sorted :-)

Thanks karenclynes :)

I will be getting insurance but for now it depends on if the vets will change him to a cross breed, had someone else today tell me he looks like he is crossed with a lab lol.

If they do I will definitely get life time cover, if not it will have to be yearly cover, as you say rotties can be prone to a lot of health problems :(

I made the mistake with my gsd only getting yearly cover, and because she has claimed in the past my vets advised me not to change as I wouldn't ever be able to claim for anything she has been to the vets for before.

I didn't realise that!

Fingers crossed my vets understand/agree.

My rottie (18 months) is with M&S and it is around £28 pcm.  I think this will go up a lot even though I haven't claimed due to the health problems they are prone to.
