Could anyone please complete the Directions for Use. The vet has stuck his label on the part which begins: "Do not use .............?
I tried to scratch the label off and the writing has rubbed off as well.

Shake well before use. Turn the white nozzle to open the product and then apply liberally into the ear canal. Gently rub the base of the ear and then wipe the interior of the ear flap with cotton or a cloth moistened with Epi-Otic Ear Cleanser.

Frequency of use: From two to three times a week to daily for routine use.

Warning: Keep out of the reach of children.

Caution: For animal use only. For topical use only. Avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact, flush eyes with warm water and seek medical attention if irritation persists.

Do not use in ears with ruptured eardrums.

I looked up the data sheet online and instructions for use but it didn't say the same as on the bottle I've been given!  :-(
I am curious to know the end of the sentence that says "Do not use............ds?? Is the ds 'cotton buds' or maybe 'steroids'?

Ah - I thought the 'Do not use' bit was about eardrums - obviously not!

The only other 'Do not use' that I can find on one of my ear cleaners (Dermapet) is 'Do not use on severely traumatized or irritated skin'.  Still no help to you though, sorry :)

I bet it's cotton buds, which we of course shouldn't use in our ears to clean them out either as it just pushes wax etc. further in!

Perhaps it's 'do not use on Staffordshire bull terrier ears' lol

Only joking of course, but it does have a terrible effect on my Staffords ears.  Really dries them out and makes all the skin flake :(

I use this ear cleaner as my breed can be prone to yeasty ear infections other ear cleaners do not seem to touch it.  This ear cleaner is very good but can in some cases have an adverse effect on some dogs. if you see any kind of signs of soreness or reaction to it then stop using it. I do not put this cleaner directly into the ear, this may be why your staffie's ears are dried out. Just put a small amount on a cotton wool pad and clean the ear out this way.    

Thanks Moomins, after it happened the first time I thought I'd perhaps used too much of the solution, so I did exactly as you have suggested and just put a small amount on the cotton wool.  However, it has happened again, so obviously my young man is a bit sensitive so I shan't be using it again on him.  Any contact with his skin seems to have the same adverse effect.

In that case yes stop using it, my vet said that some dogs are very sensitive to the ingredients . hopefully your vet can give you something else not so strong that will help.

is it perscription only or can you buy it over the counter?

I'm not sure if it's prescription only - it came with the dog I had back. He's going in to have a lump removed off his jaw tomorrow so if I remember I'll ask the vet or just get sight of a clean bottle.

I have been using this for several years allong with various courses of anti biotics on my spaniel. As soon as we got rid of one infection another one started.
Stopped using that and used Thornit again that I used to use, infection gone in 2 days and hasnt come back in the last month!!!!!!
£10 thornit/ year could have saved me about £400+ vet bills in last 2 years!!!!

I have used Epi Otic along with a few other ear cleaners and all have caused irritation, very red ears and dryness. So I have returned to using Olive oil or Almond & Vit E (as suggested on an earlier post) and Thornit. The dogs no longer run from the room when they see whats about to happen and the results have been less stressful and the ears just as clean if not more so.

Hmm, interesting about the thornit.  I used to use that in the UK, without problems.
Will see if I can get it here in Oz.

You can get it on-line without prescription.  I did when I had that long costly episode with Lexi in 2007.

I used to buy from Hyperdrug when in the UK, but of course Aus customs are a bit funny about what gets sent over.  However, I have found (much to my annoyance after spending £££'s on delivery from the UK for some new clipper blades!) an Australian importer who imports a lot of grooming products (including Thornit!!) from the Groomers UK Ltd company.

Brilliant stuff thornit have used it on my aussie when surlon would not work from the vet. It also saved me having a rough collie put to sleep many years ago when she had terrible ear trouble the infection was in the middle ear and the vet couldn't get rid of it but after using thornit for three days she never had another problem in that ear.

I'm a Thornit fan anyway, has a multitude of uses.
