Tonight on my way home from work at a very busy roundabout the car in front of me ran over a dog, I thought at first his back tyre had exploded and then shredded but then quickly realised that it was a little collie emerging from the tyre.  I was out of the car like a flash and as soon as I saw blood pooling out from under her I realised we had a major problem. Luckily a young girl came charging over and helped me with her, we got a blanket over her and she put her in my car. My Vet has a surgery about a mile away and so we both drove there. Guess she was in the vets within 5 - 10 mins of the accident. She has torn a main artery and they clamped that immediately. However, we don't know the extent of the injuries until she is x-rayed. They were phoning the number on the dog tag as we left to get permission to put her under to x-ray her. Keep all fingers and toes crossed that this little girl is okay. To say my car is a mess is an understatement, it really worries me as to how much blood she has lost in such a short space of time.

I will keep my fingers crossed for this poor girl.  How awful the driver must feel.   You've done as much as you possibly could, it's lucky your vets were so close.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 14.06.10 19:26 UTC
Aww hope she makes it.  As someone whose dog was ? stolen after my house was broken into I would hope that if that had happened to Lana someone like you would have taken her to the vets.  Luckily for me my girl found her way to my parents 2 weeks later.
- By Justine [gb] Date 14.06.10 19:39 UTC
Aww this is awful.  Thank god you and the other lady got out to help and managed to get her to your vet so quickly.  Everything crossed here for her. :(

ONG thats awful. I always get a horrible jelly belly whenever I hear of stories like that. It was lucky that someone like yourself was behind. Who knows what may have happened if not. I really hope that she is ok. I will be thinking about her all the time now until I hear further news. I do hope they will let you know how she gets on. I pray that her pain is eased, whatever it takes.
Please let us know if you hear anything.

Well done for helping. Far too many would turn a blind eye.
Did the driver stop? I thought it was law to stop if you hit a dog. Its not for a cat, but pretty sure it is if a dog.

That's awful. Hope the dog will be okay. Lois xx

Will ring the Vets in the morning and hope for some good news. The driver did stop and phone the Police. I thought the girl that helped me was from his car but it turns out that she had seen the dog running down the main road and had stopped her car to go and try and catch her. The driver must have then driven off after we left. I couldn't have done everything so quickly without her help, she was a star. Thanks everyone for the good thoughts. My Vets are really good so I am hoping that they are able to get the owners go ahead quickly. Poor little girl. I really can't tell what the extent of her injuries were as she was bundled into my car so quick and then out quickly at my Vets that we didn't see too much of her.

Well done for all you did.  I hope that the owners appreciate it.  Poor wee dog, I hope it makes it. I hate to hear of things like this .

bless you AlisonGold, it takes a cool head to sort out such an emergency--thank goodness that poor little girl had you. Hoping she makes it through, her owner must be beside herself.

Where would we be without our angels to rescue us...
- By itsadogslife [gb] Date 15.06.10 07:05 UTC
What an awful thing to witness! I hope the owners are caring enough about her to get her the help she needs.

Thank goodness you had the presence of mind to work so quickly Alison, in rushing her to the vets. Am praying she makes it through...
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 15.06.10 07:10 UTC
Hope that the news is good this morning.   How terrible for you, but thankfully you and the other girl had the presence of mind to get her to a vet asap.  Will be thinking of her.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 15.06.10 08:26 UTC
Wow, thank God you and the other girl were there to get her to a vet so quickly. You have given her the best possible chance. Hoping for good news this morning...

Just waiting for the owner to ring back (I was out with the dogs). The little girl has survived albeit very poorly. I will know more when she telephones back. The Vets have confirmed to her that she wouldn't have survived if left any longer . I know what we did saved her life but you know you /shouldn't expect anyone to do any different would you. Thankfully she has told my Mum (who lives with us and took the call) that she is insured. Will update with the news when she rings back. Thanks for all your prayers, she is a lucky girl with so many people rooting for her.

The owner has telephoned. She has severed a main artery, the Vets have confirmed that a few more minutes and she would have been dead. She has a broken jaw, she may have a broken pelvis and they are keeping her sedated for the day and may x-ray again later. She is pretty beaten up along her back but they think it is superficial.
There is quite a large shopping area (B&Q's, Staples, Halfords etc) off that roundabout and they had opened the tailgate and she leaped out and wouldn't come back when called.
Thanks for all you prayers and good thoughts, she is a very lucky girl to have so many people rooting for her. The owner is going to update me tomorrow so will keep you all informed.
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 15.06.10 09:42 UTC
Thank you for the update - terrible for the owners to have that happen.  How lucky for her that you both acted so quickly.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 15.06.10 10:56 UTC
Phew, that's a very very lucky little dog!
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 15.06.10 12:13 UTC
if that isn't the best reason for a car crate I don't know what is. Mine are never allowed out of the car without leads round my wrist. You just can't ever assume that however well trained the dog is that it won't react badly in an unknown environment. Her owners must feel just awful--poor people and dog.

alison - you angel.what a wonderful thing you did. So glad to hear the dog is recovering. Is always sad to hear these stories but heres one that will hopefully have a happy end.
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 15.06.10 13:54 UTC
We were just very lucky that my Vets is so close. I realise now that should I have had to look for a Vet and not known the vicinity she would have been dead. I think this little girl has had a guardian angel on her shoulder. If I hadn't been the next car, if I hadn't have had help from the other lady, if the Vet hadn't been so close, if I hadn't known were the nearest Vet was. Lucky girl! Well hopefully she will made a full recovery.
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 15.06.10 14:30 UTC
I hope she makes a good recovery. Well done for your quick thinking and actions - I don't know that I could be quite that effective given the same circumstances! This little dog definitely has a guardian angel somewhere. Can't believe the other car drove off with out so much as a thank you though!
- By pavlova [gb] Date 15.06.10 14:50 UTC
Well done Alison
I hope the little dog recovers well , but how are you?
I bet you and the other young lassie who helped were very shaken up by it all ,you do what you have to at the time then the shock sets in you take care of yourself you have had enough traumas this year already with your lads car accident to cope with hope you are all ok.

Hi Sharon
You have me confused with Goldiemad. However, yes, I was so calm at the time but today felt quite weepy when talking to the owner. You know isn't it funny that fate has you in the right place at the right time. Whilst I believe anybody that loves animals would do the same I am so grateful that the other girl was there too. Nobody else even got out of their cars and some cars were even trying to push their way through but I wouldn't let them past me. I have a brilliant Vets but this is one of their premises that I don't normally go to but luckily the really good Vet was there last night. Please believe me that I am no angel but I do think fate is a wonderful thing and someone was looking down on her last night. I do wonder if I could have been that cool had it been one of mine!
- By helenmd [gb] Date 15.06.10 19:39 UTC
Well done you-and so lucky for that poor dog that you were around at the time.Hope she makes a full recovery.
- By pavlova [gb] Date 16.06.10 14:26 UTC
Yes sorry I did get you confused but thats what comes of being engrossed in the subje ct and not concentrating still thank goodness you were there and I did get the breed right  if not the owner silly me!
Anyway how is the little one have you heard anymore.

Well the latest update is (relayed by my husband so it may not be totally accurate!!!). 'Rosie' has had surgery today for her broken jaw. They have decided not to operate on her pelvis (don't know why till I speak to the owner) but reading between the lines they don't think it necessary. She has a piece of bone missing from her backside but I don't know how this will affect anything. Anyway pretty good news and I think she has come out of this remarkably unscathed all things considered. The only life threatening condition was the severed main artery and thankfully speed made that a good outcome. Will keep you updated.
- By Justine [gb] Date 16.06.10 19:16 UTC
Aww thats better news Alison. You and the owner must be very relieved. She is one lucky girl. :)
- By STARRYEYES Date 16.06.10 19:24 UTC
BRILLIANT NEWS

As for severed arteries I had two torn giving birth by forceps and an incompatent registrar I was bleeding to death but saved ....and I am still here 25 yrs later so I recon there is  good chance she will be fine .

What a result..

A much deserved pat on the back for you Alison.

Roni
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 17.06.10 09:00 UTC
Thanks Roni. Sorry to hear that you have had a bad experience, just shows how the people we have trust in can make such awful errors.
I have great confidence that she is on the mend. I happen to know that my Vet (second to none) was carrying out the surgery so I know she was in good hands. So nice to know that what appeared to be such horrendous injuries has such a good outcome. Thanks for thinking of her.
The owner has asked that when she is at home would I like to come and see her. Oh yes!
- By STARRYEYES Date 17.06.10 10:35 UTC
Hi Alison , didnt really want to mention what happened to me just wanted to get the point over that severed arteries as bad as it is.. can be fixed thankfully this girl will have a story to tell her doggy mates LOL .

Wont it be super to go and see her when she is back on her feet ..you have probably made friends for life.
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 17.06.10 10:52 UTC
