I am asking a question for a friend. Do any of you have any useful advice re parvo and pregnant bitches? A friends bitch is hopefully in whelp and her other labrador has just been diagnosed with parvo. I am told by John that parvo is in her area just south of Birmingham.

Maybe of some help

Parvo stays in ground on clothes fro along time there is a real risk for the pregnant bitch and unborn pups. Really should be getting advice from Vet.

Can the dog go with someone without any other dogs that it knows until after the litter are born etc.  I remember years ago someone in my small breed was advised not to allow other dogs etc in the home for I think 12 months.  They got rid of carpets, wallpaper etc. this was many years ago.

I use detol spray. as Paevo is air born this kills it in the air.
I use it in my kennels and quarantine centre.

If poss do seperate them like suggested

No it is NOT airborne.
It is spread by direct transmission (via stools etc) or indirect transmission (fomites - inanimate objects = hands, shoes, clothing, doorknobs).

No point in spraying the air when it may be on the sole of your shoe. You could walk it in to your home, or bring it in on an infected inanimate object. Maybe by stroking your dog after touching an infected one.

I would also get some parvovirocide from hyperdrug put a mat at the front and back of the house and soak it throughout the day.
Swill dog area where they toilet and let it dry before allowing dogs back out .
I put a tiny drop into the bucket when cleaning my floors whether I have a litter or not and wipe the door handles down with a wet cloth containing  the solution.

But really dont think this will stop the bug spreading if you have a litter .

I would be finding  a friend who can take the pregnant mum in and whelp in thier home (someone that doesnt have dogs so as not to spread )

If your dog has parvo def and not guardia you will need all your time and strength to care for the sick dog.

I thought before a bitch became pregnant the breeder would make sure that all vaccines were up to date, it is maternal antibodies that will keep her puppies safe, in addition to not allowing other dogs near to them and using the type of foot dip that starryeyes mentioned - and just keeping the home really really clean and not walking into the house with shoes unless dipped etc.  I am not a breeder but just thought that was common sense!

When my pup had parvo prior to first vaccs I bought Parvocide from Hyperdrug and soaked a mat outside my door so my dogs all had to walk through it, I diluted Parvocide into a spray bottle and sprayed all floors and carpets, in fact anywhere I could spray was sprayed daily. Luckily my other dogs were all up to date with boosters, but real nightmare time. I was in complete isolation. The mums antibodies did not keep my pup safe, and she was definitely up to date before giving birth.

That must have been a difficult time sillysue, the thing with keeping boosters 'up to date' is that you cannot rely on them and a titre test is always a good idea to make sure the dog be it in whelp or not has the immunity.  Sometimes too many boosters can cancel out the immunity as with vaccinating pups too early.

My lab bitch is the one with parvo, and all of my dogs are up to date with their vaccs.

She is much better, and yes a faeces sample was positive for parvo, not guardia. She is eating again and things are looking good, the vet has said because she is fully vacc'd is the reason she is not deathly ill, she had a few days on a drip in the begining.

My bitch who is possibly in whelp is not at home at the moment, I have use of another house so my other dogs were moved out when roxy became ill.  We have mats soaked in parvocide at the entrance doors, i have scrubed top to bottom with the stuff, also have a spray bottle and I am spraying myself and anyone with contact to her.

She has been checked by my vet and as yet is in very good health.  All we can do now is wait and hope and keep them living apart.

Incidently, my bitch who has parvo has an auto immune disease and we suspect this may have played a part in her being succeptible.

Likewise.  A work colleague of mine fostered a pup who was then diagnosed with parvo.  She is no longer allowed to foster for at least 12 months.

We use a product here called F10 (I think that is also available in the UK), but we also tend to chlorinate everything if and when a parvo case becomes apparent.  Also any bedding is hygienically destroyed.

I know that treatments etc move on at a fast pace these days, and I wanted to know if there was anything we could have missed, since it was in 1986 when I had a bitch exposed to a dog with parvo and she lost over half the litter. First one died then over the next fortnight I lost a further six pups. Seems the general advice then is still the same.... Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this.
