Hello everyone, I went to the doctors last Tuesday for my monthly weigh in, all was going well untill the nurse asked if she could do a blood glucose test on me. The result was 11.9 I do not really understand it, So was asked to do a fasting test, the morning after 16 hours after food the result was 8.9 so was told she was 99.9% sure i was diabetic but needed to send a sample to the hospital for a full range of tests to be done. I go at 8.30am on Wednesday for confirmation hoping that she is wrong of course. But I am getting myself ready for the bad news.  She has also done a test which can tell what has been going on for the last six to eight weeks as she thinks that at times she would not be suprised if I have hit 20 at time. Any advice would be most helpfull

The blood test will show what your average blood sugars have been like over the past 6-8 weeks.  8.9 is high after fasting and even 11.9 is quite high, I'm insulin dependant diabetic and my sugars run between 4-6.

If you are confirmed as diabetic, it's really not a problem, I've been diabetic now for nearly 40 years, always on insulin, thankfully I've looked after myself, still have all my fingers/toes, don't need glasses etc.  It's a change of lifestyle rather than a rock around your neck!

Good luck.

Don't worry Daisysmum, if you are diabetic, it isn't the end of the world.  They will probably try to reduce your blood sugar levels with diet adjustments first of all and if that doesn't work, they will try you on tablets.   Insulin is the last resort.  It is when the diabetes goes undetected that it can become dangerous.

P.S.  Shall we wait for the advertisments at the end of this post for diabetics?  :)  :)

Oops, they are at the top already!!!!  GRRRRRRRRRR.  Admin, PLEASE do something about this!!!!

My oh went to doc last week and has been found to be borderline  results after fasting came back as 6.9. He is now waiting for second test to come back as was told anything over 7 is considered a problem.
I can imagine how you feel Daisysmum will keep fingers crossed for you but I is noce to know people here will be able to offer some support

My dad found out he had diabetes in his late 40's and started on the tablets and diet originally, it was a good few years before he had to go on insulin.  Good diet and exercise is the best way to go, I keep on telling myself this as I've piled on a lot of weight in the last 12 months.  I really need to start exercising to lower my risk.  My dad was petrified when he thought he'd have to give himself injections as he was scared of needles but it's amazing how quickly he got used to it.

Fingers crossed that diet, exercise may do the trick for you.

Well not good news I am diabetic found out for sure this morning. So tablets and a new diet is needed. I am feeling ok about it all too which is good. And a bonus which I did not know I now get free presciptions so what would have cost me £21.60 yesterday cost nothing today.

Don't worry too much about it, the diet is a healthy eating plan so you will soon feel much better for following that.  I don't know if they told you but the tablets can take a little while to 'kick in'! :)
