not sure if this is the right place but want to say thank you to this forum.i found here by goggling whepling and puppies.through my own stupidity i have found myself with an accident litter.i have 2 pedigree bitches and 1 little cross boy.my younger bitch is spayed but my 10 yr old libby isnt.shes never had proper seasons and is never out of the garden without a lead so we never saw a problem.the little boy was castrated 2nd april when he was 6 months old.during may i didnt think my old bitch was herself so we popped her to the vets.after an examination he decied to scan her and announced she was about 6 weeks in pup!!i was horrified and asked for them to be aborted.he assured me she was fit and healthy and to let her have them.my gut feeling said no but i went along with hiom as i thought he knew best.couple days before this last bank holiday libby was getting restless so knew it would be soon.she had all the classic signs for 2 days then early bank holiday sun morn after a sleepless night for us all she started straing 10 mins then just stopped.rushed her to the vets[thank god they are 24/7] and yes she was in trouble!!!she had a caesarian.1 pup stuck and dead,2 more a girl and boy fine.libby was very poorly for a week and the pups were very weak.thank god now after 2 weeks they are fat and healthy and mum is doing really well.the vet that operated on her couldnt understand why the other vet had allowed her to go ahead or at least advise me against it.i thank god that it has all ended well and i didnt lose my much loved libby.i dont know how you all cope with breeding.i have aged 20 yrs and have not been to bed for 3 weeks!!!i have learnt so much off this forum and can assure you this will never happen again in this house

hey might have been an accident but what a lovely owner your little dog has. its so clear through this post how much you love her and had really tried hard to do the right thing and I am so pleased for you that your little girl has come though it all. and she came through it because you were observent and got her up the vets in time. must have been appallingly expensive too

well the visa card certainly got a bashing!!!my husband is doing overtime now to pay it off.we have decided to keep the little girl[she WILL be spayed!!!!]and the little boy is going to have a great home with the vet nurse that revived him although i know there will be lots of tears when he goes

You did the best you could by your girl and thank goodness she came through it well. I'm sure the girl you are keeping will have a great home if you love her as much as you do your other dogs :-) . It will be interesting to hear how she turns out -  you will have to think of a designer breed name for her :-D .

Such a shame to get dubious advice from the original vet.  Particularly at her age.  But thank goodness she has an owner that loves her so much.  Accidents can, and do, happen, in the very best of homes.

I am so pleased to hear that your vigilance has brought her through all this.  As your girl improves in health, I am sure that you will get loads of pleasure watching her with her daughter.  I have a mum and daughter that play like hooligans, and it's a pleasure to watch.  (Complete time waster when you should really be doing the ironing!)  :-)

Good Luck, and well done.  :-)

Ditto the above, but it also shows how poor the advice from some vets can be regarding breeding matters.

What most people don't realise breeding is rarely their area of expertise.

Just curious, was the Father your little cross boy before or shortly after his castration.  What people don't realise that castration does not render a male immediately infertile.

It has been proven that a dog sired a litter many months after castration.

Welcome to the Forum.  You will find lots of threads on weaning, the next stage, LOL

libby had her pups 61 days after he was castrated.i never saw them mate as it was about the same time my husband was in hospital having a hip replacement!!! i didnt even see her in season!

I would seriously contemplate putting in a formal complaint about the advice from the original vet, what a ridiculous thing to do to persuade you to let your beloved Libby go through all that unecessary hardship!!!  I would complain to the vet and copy the letter to the RCVS, that sort of *advice* (and I use the term loosely) has got to be stamped out, particularly as you had asked for the sensible course of action in aborting the litter, and were swayed by their *expertise* (again, I use the term loosely).

So glad your girl came out of it ok, and I hope she makes a full recovery.

Interestingly, I've heard of castrated males siring litters up to six months after the event, so 61 days isn't all that long really.

we are on day 15 and pups are doing well, have opened eyes and crawling around.mum is eating like a horse but looks shattered.because of her age im wondering whether to start giving the pups a little feed?she does have plenty of milk and pups are content but im worried how much its taking out of her,any advice grateful

I would try them with a little solid food made very mushy.  I had a litter 8 years ago who had to be taken away from their mother when they were two weeks old due to her having mastitis and thought oh my god what am I going to do.  They wouldnt take a bottle so made very milky solid food and that lapped it up and all went on to survive and are now happy healthy veterans :-)

> well the visa card certainly got a bashing!!!

I certainly hope they reduced yoru bitll because fo the poor advice the original vet gave resulting in the whoel debacle of an out of horus C section.  If not then I woudol be after the practice manager putting in a complaint.

I have no advice, but just wanted to add that you sound like a such a lovely caring owner, and Libby is lucky to have you.

All the best for Libby and puppies x

oops sorry about the typos, got distracted and ran out of time to edit.

glad all ended well and your credit card will recover.  i'd ask the vets for every penny back as if they had advised you properly, you would not have had that bill.  I wonder if they just look at the forthcoming trade sometimes.

Your little girl sounds like she will be well loved and very happy, and how sweet the boy is going to someone who has bought him into the world.

Have you any news?
- By snip [gb] Date 17.06.10 11:48 UTC
some good news!!after complaining to the manager at vet centre about advice and treatment my bill has been halved with a full apology.it has been agreed that libby should never have been allowed to stay in pup.she has been attending this surgery since she was 8 weeks old so it was on the computer in her records how old she was.the vet in question is a new member of the practise and said he didnt realise[or i hadnt told him] her age.total hogwash.anyway thank god its all turned out ok and the pups are blooming.im so proud of libby ,shes been a fantastic mum and its giving her a new lease of life
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.06.10 13:34 UTC
I am so glad they have reduced your bill, bet the vet got a good kick up the backside.

As to Libby, it may be a good idea to start the weaning process at about 2 1/2 weeks, so that the strain of rearing is kept to a minimum.

There are lots of weaning threads and methods discussed on them.

That is great news!
