I think white goods should be made to last. I might
choose to upgrade if I want different options in the future but I shouldn't be
forced into it by shoddy manufacturing and built-in obsolescence. The majority of parts in an old fridge or washing machine cannot be recycled and much of it cannot be disposed of in an economical or ecologically friendly way.
There is big demand for, and high residual value in, secondhand Miele washing machines. You can still upgrade long before the machine has died and walk away with cash in your pocket. Another way of looking at the cost v benefit perhaps...
