Topic Dog Boards / General / How do I remove a deer tick without a tool for that purpose?
- By Admin (Administrator) Date 11.06.10 09:23 UTC
I know you can buy tools to do it but I do not have one to hand and do not have time to travel into town to buy one at the moment. The tick is located under my dogs eye, about half an inch beneath the lower lid. Normally, I 'vaseline' them and they drop off within a few hours. This time I decided to dab frontline on it (don't ask me why) and it has killed it but it has not dropped off. I realise that I need to get all the body parts out but how? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have used tweezers in the past but you have to make sure it all comes out. I cut the hair round where it was to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I put vasaline over it so it cannot breath and it lets go
or
a drop of front line straight on to it.

I removed a deer tick from a client's dog last friday.  Luckily I had the tic twister tool, but I had to google how to use it as I'd forgotten LOL  Once I got the knack it came out easily.

I also found this in my 'travels'  - works on the same principle as the tick twister ;)  Hopefully it will work for you

I use frontline, if I have nothing else around.   I spray the frontline onto tissue and flip the tick over so that you can see the underside where the mouth enters the skin, then dab the frontlined tissue round that area.   Wait for 60 seconds, then  use tweezers,  and get very close to where the tick is attached to the skin and pull quickly and cleanly.   You should see the head and legs if you have been successful.

I use my nails,  they always come out entire :)

From the BADA site:

DO NOT use petroleum jelly, any liquid solutions, or freeze / burn the tick, as this will stimulate it to regurgitate its stomach contents, increasing the chance of infection.

My dog had one just above his eye and with your finger brush it in a circular motion and it will release itself, shouldn't take longer than 1 minute. I found a site on the Internet which showed how to do it.

I have just noticed the site I found was the same as Dill and it dose work.

I'm with Pedlee on this one, never put vaseline on a tick, it may well drop off but not without possibly transmitting infection anyway.

You can use ordinary tweezers, position tweezers as close to the skin as possible, grip the tick, twist a half turn and pull, dab germolene on the hole - job done :-)

I have to get ticks off mine all the time, casualty of where we walk I suppose. I guess if it's dead, then grab gently with the tweezers and twist anti-clockwise, as you do with the tick grabber.

My tick tool is the best 3 quid I ever spent! Nasty little critters!!

I recently bought a tick hook, still in the packet, hoping its been a good omen and I dont need to use it.  When I was a vet nurse and we found one on a sedated or asleep dog, we used to use cigarettes and dab the body of the tick or use vaseline  -  mind you that was many many years ago and think thats not the done thing to do anymore!

You must remove it cleanly ... the ideas of vaseline and cigarettes, etc, are not good, as the mouth parts generally remain intact.
To remove without a tick remover hook, just use your index finger and rotate it anti-clockwise, just a few times is enough to get it to release it's grip and to remove the entire tick.

Thank you for your help. Some interesting suggestions - including a few (burning!) that horrified me! Having used vaseline for more years than I care to mention (incidently, with no ill effects, infections or anything else) this was the first time that I had used frontline to remove a tick. Needless to say it will not be my first choice in future. The frontline did kill the beast and I opted for tweezers in the end and it came away (all parts clearly visible) intact. I quite like the idea of 'dizzying' the pesky critters and plan to try that out in future. I have 'dizzied' a few pigeons over the years but never a tick :)

Its the lymes disease that is the biggest problem these days, hence no vaseline etc.

Totally agree. Not just for animals but for humans also.

My husband had two attach to him one on his leg the other on his stomach when we went to the Isle of Man got them off no ill effect so I think to get Lymes disease you have to be pretty rundown in the first place.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.06.10 19:36 UTC
It depends if the tick is carrying the disease! If it isn't (and it's more prevalent in some places than others) then you won't get it.
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 13.06.10 08:04 UTC
Absolutely! We have had a perfectly healthy young springer contract lymes disease in our area, no immume problems before, just picked up the wrong tick. Immune status makes very little difference imo.
