This evening my son witnessed a cat being run over. The other driver drove on without stopping, so Matthew stopped and rang me. By the time we got there he had moved the poor thing onto the grass verge and was sat on the floor trying to keep it calm. Another motorist had seen what happened and kindly came turned round and came back with a blanket. We have taken it to my vet's who couldn't do enough to help and although at first they didn't think the prognosis was good, they rang me just before they finished and things are looking up a bit.

The problem we have is that they are sure it is a stray so are not expecting anyone to claim it. They are quite happy to nurse it back to health should it pull through, but they have rung around all their local contacts to try and find it a rescue place for when it is well enough to leave, but everywhere is full. What they are suggesting is if he does survice, they will castrate him and then they are suggesting he be released near where he was hit. It is quite rural, and apparently there are quire a lot of feral cats live rough, but is this OK.

I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know of any "unofficial" cat rescues in the Lancashrie area that may have a place available. We don't mind transporting him within a reasonable distance.

Have you tried Cats Protection Preston (01772 748788)? They are usually very helpful and might be able to advise alternatives if they can't help .

As of this morning, he is continuing to do well. He has been xrayed, etc and unbelievably doesn't seem to have any significant injuries. He has been treated with large doses of steroids and apart from being terrified, is doing well.

After a lot of phone calls, I have arranged with a friend who has a farm that we can release him on her property as soon as he is ready to be released. She has taken on a few similar cases over the years and is familar with the correct way to introduce him to his new territory.

I fully expected to have to foot the bill myself, but I am so pleased with how our vet practice has helped out, apparently they will receive £60 off the RSPCA towards their costs, but the rest is just written off. Locally they are known as being quite expensive, but if we all pay an extra £ or two on our bills and helps them tend to injured strays like this one, then I for one am not complaining.
