I have a 4 day old pup who, although one smaller of 8, has done quite well up until now. He is having trouble latching onto the nipple today, does a lot of head moving and feet pumping like he is on, but his mouth is not connected. I had one do it yesterday too, but some supervision while she finally got it together, and she's OK, but he's still finding it difficult. It's quite worrying as they can go down quite quickly. Has anybody got some suggetions please?

Use one of the bigger pups to get the milk flow going, and remove, putting little one in its place.

Oh, very good! That sounds logical. It wasn't latching on, just messing around and mouthing it. I rang a local breeder who suggested putting some of my saliva onto the teat, then putting the pup on, and it worked...... my germs and all. It has had a feed now without the others, so when it is ready for another, I will do what you suggest... put a big pup on.
