I have a  bitch who can only be described as VERY pregnant. Her first scan said between 13-15 and on a second count there were 14. Have been taking her temperature for 2 days already so I would have a accurate base line from her and normall it's up at 38.1 and above, this morning at 36.9, took it again as it's just too soon and then it was 37.1.
She is day 54 today, there was only one mating on day 13.
Her milk isn't in yet and she's still eating food happily, she had a litter last year of 10 and went on day 60 bit obviously she wasn't anywhere near as big. You can feel puppies moving all the time now so they seem fine.

What's the earliest and safest she could possibly have them, I am havingy husband check her temp again at 2pm when he gets home to see if the low Reading was a fluke.

Known quite a few on day 56 all been fine other than the normal worries. (missing placentas, the occasional pup on the smaller size etc)

I have a breed that regularly whelps a week early, so I go with day 56 too.

I once had a girl carrying 6 (far too many for the breed) and she went 10 days early.  Pups were not viable.

7 days early and pups have always survived.
- By Askara [gb] Date 06.06.10 13:36 UTC
Thanks for all the replies! been rather busy sorting out the last few bits for my girl.

Today is day 57 and this morning her temp dropped to 36.7 so it looks like puppies are on the way tonight!

to top the day off my 1 yr old just placed 5/15 in Junior at Sourthen counties! her first placing at a champ show in ages.

Will go and have a nap later on so i can manage though out the night and still be sane.
Lets hope all 14 get here safe.

Well shes been going for 12 hours now. 13 puppies later and we are all great. shes still contracting but she is exhausted  so going to stay with her till shes done. Currently laying outside her box on a selection of pillows/blankets/cushions.

a rather interesting ratio. 4 boys.. the rest girls!

There were another 2 to come but were asleep before I could say hi to them.

Sadly not. 2 were still born and one passed in in the hour window where I got 60 minutes sleep.

The other 13 are doing fine now. Emailing the people on my waiting list tonight. Should have homes for then all. :)
- By SharonM Date 12.06.10 16:11 UTC
I wait until my pups are a week old before e-mailing people, this first week is critical for the survival, I would hate to tell somebody they have a pup, then something happen to it, especially with it being such a big litter.

Good luck!
- By JeanSW Date 12.06.10 22:24 UTC
You are so right Sharon.  I will never, ever count chickens again.  I let someone know that their longed for bitch had been born, she died the next day.  I will never do it again.  I actually wait now until thermostat kicks in at 3 weeks.
- By Askara [gb] Date 12.06.10 22:33 UTC
It's more I email saying the litte has arrived if they are still interested let me know. I don't offer a puppy, just find out if I need to start arranging home checks. :)
Ended up spending all night with the littlest girl and far too tired to construct a email anyway!
- By misswager [gb] Date 13.06.10 08:41 UTC
13 pups! congrats...mamma must be exhausted (you too)!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.06.10 08:46 UTC
Good luck with the pups.  I tend to think of them as survivors if they make the first week without anyone having issues.

Thank God our breed don't usually have such large litters, half that is plenty.

I once had two litters born a few days apart, making 14 puppies, it really took away a lot of the enjoyment and getting to know puppies as individuals.

My current litter of 5 is just nice, really able to give individual attention and get to know each pups quirks and developing personality.

2+1 - plus the 13 - still makes 16 by my maths!

You must be exhausted - hope mum is coping well and remaining pups thrive.  Is this her first litter?

Good luck and I hope you have plenty of people around to give you a break to rest.

Will close this as the pups are here now - congratulations!
