well i am definitely getting old i have had reading glasses for the last 5 years but recently had my eyes retested  and now have a pair of vari focals for reading and driving  dont know wether i will ever get used to them any tips

I have had bifocals for 2 years and just couldn't get on with them. I now have varifocals and they are brilliant! I can see properly again..... It only took me 5 minutes to get used to them, but the optician said it could take a few days. I must have been so pleased just to get away from the horrid bi-focals than anything would have been better. I had thought at one point of going back to my old glasses, just so that I could see properly again. :-) I do not regret one bit agreeing to try out the varifocals.

Just goes to show that we all need to try things out first!!

After wearing glasses for a few years, changed to varifocals.  Might as well have just thrown the money in a dustbin.  Never, ever got on with them, although I really did try because they were so expensive.

Gave up eventually and went back to my old prescription.  Two years later I decided to try bifocals.  What a difference!  Took me 2 days to get used to them, and I praise them to the heavens.   Wouldn't want to be without them now.  I love them.  :-)

I also was talked into vaifocals by my optician but he asked me to try them for a couple of weeks to see if I liked them for  my reading glasses and watching tv . I hated them ..found I spent my time moving my head up and down to look at stuff . I went back and he changed them to a pair of D&G for best and a cheaper pair for spare.

I too got a very expensive pair of varifocals, and hated them. I kept getting the sea sickness feeling when walking. Really did try with them but they did not suit me. I found they were fine for driving and when sitting but no good when on the move.

I found the bi-focals gave me the sea sick feeling. Not only that but the line across the 'break' was in the wrong place. When I walked the dogs I coldn't see where I was putting my feet. No problem with them now :-p

I've been wearing Varifocals for about 4 years now   Have found them BRILLIANT, but I was far too vain to even contemplate Bi-Focals so I was really detemined to get on with them :-D

I put them on when I got home and kept them on.  Kept moving my head from side to side and up and down while reading, watching TV, walking around, and after a few hours didn't even notice them - except I could see everything properly :-D

If you can't get on with them, have them checked/double checked.  It may be that there is a slight mistake in their setting or manufacture, it happens occasionally - even in the most expensive/exclusive places ;) 

Sometimes the frame chosen for the Varifocals isn't quite the right size or shape, too small and they won't work for you - it depends on your prescriptions and the optician/assistant shoud be able to help you with this.  The better  quality lens does make a difference.

Can you tell I used to work for an Ophthalmic Optician?  :p

Definitely :) With my first pair, I would take them off while using the computer at work (although if I looked down the office I couldn't see a thing :) ). I could read perfectly well without them :( However, my second pair are much better and stay on all day :) :)

They do take a lot of getting used to, even my second pair took a few weeks :)

thanks for all the tips i will keep going with them ,its just the head movement i cant get used to

I had no problems with my first pair of varifocals but my new pair have a slightly smaller lens and I do find myself having difficulty when my eye catches the wrong part of the lens for what I'm doing so maybe that is the problem for those who have found them difficult to get on with. After a week or so I had got used to the new shape but I still occasionally have a problem catching the reading part when I actually need the distance part.

My mum has tried both and hated bifocals - she couldn't get on with them at all but she has no problem with  varifocals at all.

Persevere - you will get used to them in the end

my oh wears these type and they do take some getting used to but its worth it in the end.

I've been wearing them for a few years now & must be on my 4th pair. The most adjustment I had to make is with the last pair, all the smaller frames seemed to be in vogue and I did struggle to look through the right bit. After a couple of weeks I didn't even think about it and couldn't be without them.

However, a family member decided they weren't for her at the opticians door!

I wish they could make varifocal contact lenses.

I've tried bifocal contacts but unfortunately they didnt work for me. Now back to glasses for distance and taking them off for close work after 30 years of contact I do not like it  oh dear this getting older is such a pain !!!

:) My OH is 63 and has worn glasses since he was 20 for distance. A couple of years ago he was told by the optician that he only needs to wear glasses for reading now :) Just before this, he took his glasses off one day while driving around the M25 and announced that he could see better without them !! I wasn't happy and told him that he had better go and get his eyes tested before he drove without them :) :)
