Hi, have been planning to mate my girl on this season. She is on day 1 today, was mated on day 14 last time. Was wondering if it would be alright to worm her today? I sometimes think the vets don't know enough about breeding (or at least the planning part). She's showing no signs of worms and was wormed about 4 months ago.

Also, what are your views on spot on Frontline? If she was treated in the next couple of days, would the residual effect be harmful if she was mated? Both my dogs have been having Garlic tabs which is supposed to help, but we seem to have a flea problem every summer, I think it's the wildlife in the places we go (I have a cat too). If she does get pregnant, I'll probably try Frontline spray, but don't want to give her anything at this point which could prove to be any risk to a planned pregnancy.

Thanks

I generally worm from day 42 of pregnancy with Panacur until 2 days post whelp.

Never used Frontline anywhere near pregnancy but I don't know the ins and outs.

Looking on this site it says

http://www.vmd.gov.uk/productinformationdatabase/Default.aspx

4.7.  Use during pregnancy, lactation or lay,
The product can be used during pregnancy and lactation.

also says the product should not be used on puppies less than 8 weeks old

Thanks for the information Chris, I've bookmarked it, very interesting reading!!

I don't think I dare risk using the Frontline spot-on, I'm worried about residual effects and being as it's a really strong chemical I don't feel comfortable using it so near to possible pregnancy. Obviously I should be able to worm her before mating, so not so much of a problem.

Back to the drawing board I think... maybe a natural repellent? Oh, and I just picked a tick off her which was crawling about, not attached thank goodness.

I use Panacur 10% for all my pregnant bitches, and start pups on it from day 14.  Always been fine with it.

I once had a bitch that was pregnant during a hot summer, and had fleas.  Spot on is a NO NO.  But my vet said to use Frontline spray, as it was licensed for use on pregnant bitches.  I used it (on a very small bitch), and she was fine, and pups were born normally.  Would use it again if ever I needed to.

Thanks Whitelilly, I have garlic tabs from Dorwest Herbs, will carry on giving them.

Jean, I too would never give spot on during pregnancy, but she has only just come into season, so we're approx 14 days away from mating. I'm worried that if I give her the spot on now, the residual effect could be harmful. What do you think? My feelings are probably better not to do it. I was thinking of giving her a bath before going to the stud, as she would feel more comfortable especially with this hot weather. Maybe I could use a medicated shampoo which repels fleas...?

I agree, this close to mating, I don't think I would use spot on.

If she does get fleas once pregnant, I can say that the spray works and has no side effects, even in very small breeds.
