Not noticed before but I have suddenly found that I have advertising messages at the end of the page  .....is this new ?

No such luck!  I've been playing about with the preferences settings but all it seems to do is remove what they describe as targetted ads and just display ads in general.  I think they say the number of ads will stay the same. :(
