Hi Guys i would appreciate some advice. My 5 wk old LB pups were wormed on Saturday with Drontal puppy suspension , they were dosed correctly for their weight etc , i was quite shocked to see quite afew worms being passed in their poo , they are still passing a small amount today.
They were wormed at 3 wks and i didn't see any then , mum was done at the same time. So why am i seeing them now , does this mean the wormer was not effective the first time round at 3 wks? Mum was wormed with panacur 10 during her pregnancy til 2 days post whelp.
The pups are very happy in themselves and are eating and drinking well , playing etc however today i noticed that one of them was trying to poo and all that passed was some mucus and nothing else , he continued straining but no poo just a small amount more mucus. Should i be worried? I must admit i was horrified to see the worms as i had been so careful with the worming mum etc . They are due to be wormed again at 7 weeks.

If they were taking milk from mum after being wormed at 3 weeks of age, the larvae pass through the milk to the puppies that is why you saw worms after worming them on Saturday. 

We worm our pups every fortnight until they are 12 weeks of age, then monthly up until 6 months of age.   After that we routinely worm every 3 months whether we see worms or not.

If you continue to see worms then ask for a worm count at the vet, drontal puppy only worms for roundworms, it is possible but not very likely that they may have picked up other species, in which case you need to ask your vet.

are you giving them the dosage seperately not in the food? as the dosage is very important.

I use panacur at 3 wks when puppies begin solids then 5 wks and 8 wks the 8 wks we then give drontal in tablet form  after that the puppies go to the new homes.

If you are worming correctly and seeing heavy worm burden then I would contact the vet for advice.

Hi Starryeyes , yes i dosed them individually via a syringe so that i could make sure they got the correct dose , they have all just poo'd after lunch and no worms were present this time . They seem fine in themselves , might just give vet a call to be on the safe side though.

I have never seen worms in any of my puppies in all the generations I have been using panacur in pregnancy and then for the pups, the wormer works on the early stages of the worms development and dissolves them, so you should not see adult worms.

I have only ever seen adult worms in a rescue litter where mother and they had never been wormed, and they were obviously wormy as 6 week olds, so much so that they had pot bellies, poor coats and white gums.

I would suspect a different species of worm as already suggested.  i would take a sample to the vet for analysis.

I agree with Brainless that I have never, ever seen worms in a pup after using Panacur during pregnancy.

Poo sample for your vet?  I think that's your next step.

Glad you have said that Jean/Brainless my litter was wormed with drontal at 2 weeks and the number of people that have said to me you should see worms :-0 it was bothering me that I couldnt see any!! but mum was wormed with drontal before mating and panacur from day 40 til 2 days post whelp.

Which the pups benefited from even before they were born!  :-)  :-)

If mum hadn't been done while worms were rampant (when pregnant), then by the time pups were wormed, yes, you would have seen them.  But your pups were born 98% worm free to start with.  :-)  :-)
