Topic Dog Boards / General / Micro chip question

Hi

Friends and i found a dog las night and it was handed to the police and taken to the dog pound. Friend has phoned the pound today to see if the dog is ok and been claimed. The  pound scanned it and found a chip so said the owners will be contacted.

My question is if this dog is not claimed by the owners and rehomed what happens with the chip details? Can they be changed to the new owners without the original owners permission, and will the old owners be notified of the change?

yes the chip details can be changed without the previous owners signature , breed rescue do this on a regular basis though i dont know if they can do it with stray dogs but i would think if no one claims it ,petlog etc do this free of charge for rescues

how would you prevent someone stealing a dog and then changing the chip details?

I suppose by informing the chip register that the animal had been stolen/gone missing.

has to be a kc registered breed rescue or charity such as dogs trust/rspca  in order to change the details otherwise they do require a signature  if the dog has been reported as missing/stolen it would flag up that someone was trying to change the details

I rehomed a bitch a few years ago. The 'owners' family couldn't find any of the documents. The person who took on the bitch contacted the microchip company and told them the story. They had to wait for a month during which time the chip company tried to contact the previous owners. Without any success as they had done a runner to Spain ;-). The bitch's details were then transferred to the new owner.
