size doesnt always matter ,but its along time for pup not to drink? can you squize any milk from mum and slowly drop the milk into pups mouth? and see what he does once hes had a taste? i hope he makes it xx

- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 04.06.10 04:24 UTC
How is everything this morning?   Hope the little boy is now suckling, you have to keep trying and hold him on until he gets the hang of it.
- By Carrington Date 04.06.10 05:24 UTC
Congratulations!!! You are no doubt snoozing next to the litter right now, hope that the first born is now feeding, little worrying. If still nothing, you will have to try to hand rear him. It's always best to have a syringe, bottle and some whelpi in your whelping kit just in case, if you don't have and he is still not feeding get down to your vet this morning, would be best as it is your first litter to have your girl checked over too with a post natal exam, your vet can also give an injection to make sure everything has left the uterus especially if not 100% sure the first placenta came away.

Fingers crossed that the little one is now feeding.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 04.06.10 05:46 UTC
well done!!!! i hope all is well with the 1st boy? any more pups since then? the best of luck with with your litter xx
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 06:08 UTC
4 boys 1 girl, second girl was born still, sleep tight little one, little boy still not feeding, just waiting for the vets to open so i can ring up to book them in, think i might end up hand rearing the little one as it wont latch onto the nipple but has no probs sucking on a finger, her milk hasnt come in yet so things might improve when it does
- By white lilly [gb] Date 04.06.10 06:45 UTC
so sorry about 2nd girl ,:( ,yes maybe once her milk comes in he might suckle fingers crossed ,amke sure you ask for your girl to have the oxitosin jab xx
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 06:49 UTC
i will, im not sure if there is still another pup inside as i can feel a bump, she has just ate a tin of chicken soup

think the little girls placenta became detatched as there was a gush of green fluid before she was born and when my bitch pushed the pup and placenta came flying out, tried with her for about 20 mins but she had gone :(
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 06:54 UTC
another girl :)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 04.06.10 07:23 UTC
THATS WONDERFUL!!!!! :) looks like she just needed a brake :) wonder if theres more?
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 07:25 UTC
iv had a feel an dont think i can feel any more but who knows lol
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 08:00 UTC
she still has vert little milk, when should her milk come in? the little boy is trying to suckle now but is going mad and crying constantly because there isnt any milk
- By Sheltpap Date 04.06.10 08:13 UTC
Congratulations on your new arrivals. Hope your bitch's milk comes in.  With my last litter (now 7 weeks old) the milk never did appear and they both had to be handreared.  Luckily I knew of someone with vast experience so they went to her - got them back a couple of weeks ago.  Hopefully though you girl's milk will come in but, if not, don't leave it too long as pups get dehydrated and go downhill so quickly.  Good luck
- By Gema [gb] Date 04.06.10 08:23 UTC
Congratulations on the pups arrival! This is going to be me in about 7 / 8 days..... I am slightly worried about my bitches nipples - they are so huge I just hope the puppies will be able to latch on?
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 04.06.10 08:24 UTC
There should be milk by now, in the first stages it is the colostrum.  Have the other pups fed, if so there is milk there, let him feed first and just hold him on and try to express some milk for him.  Otherwise you will have to get set up with a premature baby's bottle, etc., your vet will have whelpi (puppy milk) or similar.
- By sunshine [gb] Date 04.06.10 08:29 UTC
Well done on the pups.  Sorry one wasn't saved.

There are some things you can give to help bring the milk in, I'll find my list out if no one can remember.

Hope you're getting some rest inbetween.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 04.06.10 09:12 UTC
give her plenty of milk to drink ,soak all her food ,plenty of protein foods to eat ,eggs cheese for calcium. theres much more too.
x
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 11:12 UTC
just back from the vets, puppies are all fine, vet has advised us to hand rear for first couple of days untill milk comes in
- By white lilly [gb] Date 04.06.10 11:19 UTC
but the 1st couple of days is when the pups need the colostrum from mum.

i would let pups still keep suckling from mum or her milk might not come in, then just give very small amounts ,as its the constent sucking that brings in the milk, good luck x
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 12:15 UTC
pups will be with mum all the time so they can suck away but we are topping them up as she hasnt any milk yet
- By rocknrose [gb] Date 04.06.10 12:35 UTC
Hows the little one that wasn't sucking??
- By sunshine [gb] Date 04.06.10 12:52 UTC
Glad all is fine and well.  Roll on sleepless nights.

Sounds like you have the suckling under control, fron what i understand them paddling also helps bring the milk on even if they're not getting anything or much.  good luck with the feeding and hope your girl is recovering well.
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 15:22 UTC
the little one wont suckle from a bottle so we are syringe feeding him atm and is taking that
- By LittleGreen [gb] Date 04.06.10 17:45 UTC
Woooohooo!! Great news,:) I'm sorry to hear you lost the little girl though. I've been offline as I managed to blow up yet another computer, so I've lots to catch up on. Congratulations on the arrival of your babies xx LG
- By munrogirl76 Date 04.06.10 18:02 UTC
Congratulations! Remember (if you are awake enough :-D ) to keep putting pups on your girl as well when they're hungry before feeding, as their sucking can help stimulate milk production hormonally.
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 18:16 UTC
all pups apart from the little boy are suckling on mum when they are awake, i have been feeding the every 2 hours 3.5mls is this to much to be feeding the others that are suckling on mum? she has a bit of milk now but not huge amounts, i will continue feeding the little on every 2 hours though
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 04.06.10 18:41 UTC
You will know when they've had enough , and their little bellies will be fat. I wouldn't worry about your little boy if he is syringe feeding.
I raised a whole litter ( giant breed ) by syringe as they wouldn't take the bottle.
As for feeding 3.5 mls I can't really advise as I don't know what size breed you have , sorry.
Also I'm sorry to hear about your little girl , it has happened to me in the past and I can still see them in my head right now. But at the minute you won't have time to think about anything else other than feeding , cleaning and grabbing the odd nap for yourself.
Good luck with your litter.

they are a medium breed, mum was 17kg pre pregnancy, going to buy some scales tomorrow so i can monitor pups gains
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 04.06.10 18:58 UTC
I'd say 3.5 mls sounds okay . Having the scales will ease your mind when you see them gradually gaining. I weigh mine at the same time once every day and keep notes on every pup.
- By munrogirl76 Date 04.06.10 20:50 UTC
Good that they're sucking off mum too. :-) While I know about suckling and hormones I haven't personally raised a litter - but if they're not getting much off mum then going by the guide on whatever milk substitute you are using and adjusting if needed based on weight gain sounds like a good plan - has your mentor/ vet got any advice?
- By danielle-k9 Date 04.06.10 21:58 UTC
Sometimes the bitch seems like she has no milk but to be honest once the pups suckle it is there. If the pups are content suckling and not crying then she has milk!! If the lil  pup is sucking your finger have you tried to let him suck and then slowly put him to the teat and change your finger for the teat. He only needs to latch on. I would also get some nutri drops as this stimulates them to want to feed.

You have done a great job so far and as long as you are getting milk into them thats the main thing.

Well done!!
- By cb87 [gb] Date 04.06.10 23:43 UTC
my vet was just about useless when it came to the suplement feeding, she just told me to get some milk and feed, she hadnt got a clue about hand rearing, no mention about how often or how much, my mentor has never had this problem before either,

other pups are content and sleeping and there bellys feel round an not sunken so they must be getting milk, mum has some milk but when i detatch one of the bigger pups off a teat to try and get the little one on i can never squeeze any out.

iv given her milk and water, whelpi, puppy kibble with chicken soup poured over the top

oh an i have tried many a time to get the little one to go from my finger to the teat but still no luck, was one of the first things i tried
- By Carrington Date 05.06.10 08:33 UTC
Full milk doesn't come in for 2 weeks cb87 that is when the teats will fill out with milk, and it is very noticeable, bitches who have had a litter previously tend to fill up much quicker and may even leak milk from the beginning, in my experience most maiden bitches can look as though the teats are not too full but the first milk, cholostrum is there and feeding the pups adequately, helping with the immune system and giving them everything they need, if they have rounded tums they are feeding well, the pups continual suckling will bring in the full milk and you will really see a huge difference in teat size in a another weeks time. So if the pups are thriving and have full tums then don't worry.

Vets often don't have a lot of advice re: anything to do with breeding, your mentor will always know more, something many of us have found out along the way. :-)

Re: The pup who is still not suckling from the teat. Have you tried some whelpi on your finger as the pup will suck your finger then putting some drops of whelpi on the teat then gently removing your finger and placing him near the teat? Otherwise I guess you will have to just continue with the syringe feeding.
